This statement is about the active need to teach boys about being men. It is not sufficient to simply say that boys eventually become men...they must be "taught"
St Pauls College has an active part in this process of boys being taught how to be men for at least 7 years. Years 7-13
For 113 years on this site boys have been taught how to become men . In the past it was tough. Today it is a bit more gentle.
So how do Boys get taught how to become men?
Let's try 5 ways:
1. Boys are addressed en masse as "gentlemen"
Not "lads", "boys,""students" "guys"or simply "you"
But Gentlemen
This gives them status and aspiration to model their behaviour and direction in life.
Gentlemen are expected to have manners,hold themselves well and behave appropriately in every different situation.
Boys need to be taught what are manners and what is social respect.
2. Boys are expected to dress well and for the occasion.
It is not sufficient to simply put on any clothes as if to say it doesn't matter what I wear. Boys need to be taught how to dress well in every situation.
At St Paul's College we have been insistent that every boy wears a tie and that all 11-13 boys wear a blazer to all classes at school.
Teachers appreciate well dressed students. Boys appreciate the positive comments they receive about their dress.
Boys are more settled and are more serious students in their classrooms.
As a school we need to uplift our PHYSED uniform so that for every PE period boys dress appropriately.
3. Boys need to be well qualified.
Gone are the days when anyone could get a job with little or no qualifications. Every boy should be leaving St Paul's College with University Entrance in year 13 as a minimum.
At St Paul's college the curriculum is geared to ensuring that boys have UE as their basic qualification.
Boys must be taught how to be a student..how to learn.
Boys need to be taught the importance of deadlines for work.

4. Boys need to control impulsivity and to delay gratification
This is a basic message which parents and teachers need to be on constant vigilance.
Boys response "I am hungry"
Parents response"wait until dinner"
Boys need to learn to put their hand up in the classroom and not call out.
Boys need to learn the five second rule of waiting before making any decision
Boys need to learn that they may be angry but NEVER violent in words or action
5. Boys need to express themselves
Gone are the days of grunts and eye flapping as a means of communication.
They need to have an opinion, to express that opinion confidently and to communicate well with other people.
Boys need to be taught how to communicate and not be allowed to be grunters, how to introduce speakers, to have courage in speaking before others
Boys need to learn how that communication is in words, in the tone of voice and in gesture.
There are many other things that Boys need to learn in order to become men
My prayer is that St Pauls gentlemen become strong men with these qualities.

Parents..we need to have ONE subject ONE exercise book for each student in every classroom at every period.

CURRICULUM UPDATE
SENIOR EXAMS
Senior exams on the 20th of June 2016. This is an opportunity for all senior students to practice exams under the NZQA external exam conditions that they will experience at the end of the year. All exams will take place during the normal school day and students will not be allowed to leave school at any point during the exam period. We encourage you to speak to your child about their upcoming exams and support them in their examination preparation. All students should be completing a minimum of two hours of study each night in preparation for exams.
REPORTING EVENING
Our school report night is on Thursday 23 June from 3.30pm till 7.20pm. This is an opportunity for all parents and students to meet with teachers to discuss learning and achievement at school. Parent report night will be held in the school gym and we ask all parents to book their appointments in advance. School reports will only be issued to parents that attend.

MUSIC UPDATE
Our year 7 & 8 choir visited The Salvation Army in New Lynn, making an impact on their Women's Ministries event by providing an outstanding performance. From the time our students arrived, they showed courage and respect at all times, including when they stepped in and cleared everyone\s lunch dishes, A great sense of pride in our school was demonstrated by the boys.
The Big Sing choir will be performing at the Auckland Town Hall on Wednesday 15 June, if your son is participating in the event, please ensure that he is at every practice.

POMPALLIER SHIELD
This is an annual event in which all the Catholic Schools in the Auckland Diocese participate. Liston College hosted this event on Wednesday 25th May.
The categories for this year were:
a) Scripture Reading: Senior, Junior, Maori.
b) Oratory: Senior and Junior
c) Drama
St. Paul’s College won a third place in Maori Scripture Reading category and we would like to Congratulate TyAaron Leniu on his effort.
We would also like to acknowledge Jason Tevaga and Joseph Johnston who took part in the Senior and Junior Scripture Reading categories.
We are proud of our students who spoke with conviction during this competition!

CHAMPAGNAT FEAST DAY MASS
We had our annual Champagnat Feast Day Mass at the Cathedral on Thursday 2nd June.
The Mass was well attended by staff students and dignitaries from the Catholic board.
Our students were at their best behavior and their singing drew very positive responses from those present at the service.
Fr. Alan Roberts celebrated the mass and was in awe with the St. Paul's participation.
Well done to everyone for a great effort and a strong message conveyed during our Jubilee Year of Mercy

AUCKLAND WRITER'S FESTIVAL
I had the pleasure of going along to the Auckland Writers festival with Mrs Hogan and a group of Year 11 & 12 students. It was a great success as we listened to various authors talk about the stories behind their novels, short stories and poems, and also the processes they go through when writing. Guest speakers included established Young Adult fiction authors such as John Boyne (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) and Michael Grant (BZRK, Gone series), and we were also treated to some live spoken word poetry by Australian author/poet Maxine Beneba Clarke. Hopefully this inspires a few of our students to develop their own writing and understand that their stories are worth sharing.

IKA Creative Writing Prize 2016
The Ika Creative Writing Prize* is a competition for writers who live in the greater Auckland area.
There are two categories:
- High school students in Years 12-13
- Adults aged 18 years or older.
- Prizes for first place and first runner-up will be awarded in each category.
- First prize: A scholarship of $2,300 to study creative writing at MIT
- First runner-up: a Booksellers gift voucher to the value of $100.
- Entries open on Friday 1 July, and close on Friday 26 August 2016.
- Only one entry per person is permitted.
- Submissions may be up to 4,000 typed words in total.

SOLE PURPOSE PROJECT
Did you know Clubfoot is the most common birth defect, effecting 1 out of every 1000 children born worldwide? Pacific Island children have the highest rate per child born each year (7 out of every 200).
'Sole Purpose Project' was started by a St Paul's Old boy Anthony Osa and his wife Mellissa to help children in the Pacific Island receive treatment . After his son Carmelo was born with club feet, they decided they wanted not only their son but all children born with this condition to be able to live a normal active life.
Together they started the Sole Purpose Project to make this dream a reality and give those in the Pacific Islands access to quality treatment and to hope for a normal life.

SAMOAN LANGUAGE WEEK
As part of Samoan Language week, 11 boys’ performed at our neighboring Marist Primary school’s assembly on Friday 3rd June.
Sione Tuipulotu and Zephaniah Aerenga interacted with the children, introducing them to the famous warm up; Mili, mili, mili, mili (rubbing together of hands) before the ‘lua pati’ (2 claps). Followed by the animal calls: ‘Tiger!’, ‘Buffalo’, 'Pussycat'! It was clear the children enjoyed the Samoan warm up!
The boys’ sang the Hymn ‘Faafetai ile Atua’ harmoniously, followed by the National Anthem (Samoan tula’I ma Sisi ia, lou fu’a, lou pale lea!), and the crowd favourite; the faataupati, letting the children know, it was the Samoan way of getting rid of mosquitoes.
After a few rounds, the boys’ invited students to come forward and join the dance – there were certainly a lot of volunteers keen to share their moves!
Thanks to Zephania for taking leadership of the group, Jirah Momoisea and Sione Tuipulotu (our honorary Tongan/Samoan). The rest of the dance crew were Raymond Pua, Shepherd Vili, Toma Futi, David and Jacob Smith, Dylan Tavita and Jason Tevaga.

Our Senior Basketball team has kicked off an excellent start to their season. 3 victories from 3 games with a current points differential of +121 points! Coach Mat Pulsford reports consistent efforts from Jacob Smith, Levi Atiga and Luke Kelemete. According to the stats, Senior basketball is currently the best performing winter sports team, keep up the great work!
The 1st XIII Rugby league team overcame player withdrawal, injury and torrential downpours recently at Wesley College to keep their season alive. After leading 2-0 at halftime in the tough conditions, Jaelin Murray slotted a field goal to win the game 11-10. Jaelin and his fellow year 11 players Daetyn Tanuvasa & Star Toa have impressed all season with their consistent efforts. The Year 11's are showing everyone that the future is bright for rugby league at St Paul's college with their work ethic and attitude.
Our U15 Basketball & Rugby Union teams continue their seasons with mixed results - some wins, draws and losses as the teams find their feet in very competitive grades. Year 10 at St Paul's has a lot of depth for sporting talent, recently 11 students were invited into St Pauls' new sports academy - where they'll learn about leadership, time management, sports nutrition, training, recovery and much more.

Our 2nd XIII/reserve rugby league team continues to push for spots in the premier team. 3 victories from 3 games with scores of 44-0, 16-0 and 44-0! In other words, this team is yet to concede a point in 2016 and have put 100 points on the board, outstanding defensive efforts. Frank Tuitama and Cullen Marsters impressed early on, forcing their way into the 1st XIII off the back of their performances,
Well done gentlemen!
The 1st XV are working hard on and off the field, all players recently completed a rugby-smart concussion course and were outstanding throughout the course. After a narrow loss to Waitakere College in the rain, the team bounced back last week with a close victory over Edgewater college 10-8. A testament to the work these boys have been doing was evident in recent selections for Auckland Blues trials - congratulations to Sione Fakapalea, Sione Tuipolotu, Jirah Momoisea, Viance Vano & Frank Tuitama - well deserved and good luck!

SPL Old boy and recent Warriors debutant Tof Sipley visited the boys recently to share his experiences on his journey from St Paul's to AUT to the NRL. We hope to see all of these boys emulate the sporting and academic success that Tof has already achieved at a very young age.
