Fracking at Sherwood unites new rebel band

Campaigners fear a Swiss-based petro-chemical company could sink up to 500 wells in the area famed for Robin Hood and his band of merry men. After fracking was given the go-ahead near Kirby Misperton in North Yorkshire, opponents of shale gas extraction are wondering, “Where’s next?”
A prime candidate is Sherwood Forest, among several huge areas licensed to Ineos for shale gas extraction by the Government. Exploration work could begin within the next 12 months. Although the ancient woodland around Robin Hood’s Major Oak is protected from surface activities under new laws, fracking is allowed, as long as drilling is done outside its borders.
A group has been formed to fight the plans, while Ineos has held public meetings in a bid to calm fears. Greg Hewitt, of Frack Free Nottinghamshire, said: “Robin Hood would have defended Sherwood Forest. So must the people of Nottinghamshire.”

How a Nottinghamshire hamlet wages quiet battle against fracking

After North Yorkshire allows test drilling, villagers in Misson are determined to stop the same happening in former bomber pilot testing ground
When councillors in North Yorkshire ignored widespread public opposition and granted planning permission for the fracking company Third Energy to carry out test drilling, there were groans around the Nottinghamshire village of Misson.

IGas submits Tinker Lane shale gas application

IGas has confirmed it has applied for planning permission to drill for shale gas at Tinker Lane, in Bassetlaw, north Nottinghamshire. This is the company’s second application for shale gas exploration in the area. Later this summer, councillors are expected to decide on proposals for two wells at Springs Lane, Misson.

The Misson application does not include fracking and IGas has said the Tinker Lane application will not either. But the company has said it may apply later to hydraulically fracture at the sites in future.

PETITION: Say no to fracking.

North Yorkshire County Council have said Yes to dangerous fracking. This is despite the opposition of thousands of local residents, businesses and Ryedale District Council.

Fracking poses unacceptable risks to people’s health, homes and goes against everything we need to do to tackle dangerous climate change. The people of Yorkshire want to make it clear that this decision is not in their name, and they will continue the fight against fracking. Will you stand with them?

RESOURCE: Fracking's Air Pollution Puts Infants and Children at Risk of Developing Heart, Lung Problems

A newly published peer-reviewed study concludes that air pollution from fracking puts people's lungs, hearts, and immune systems at risk – and that the health risks are particularly pointed for young children and infants.

The study — the first to specifically focus on how shale oil and gas drilling affects children ability to breathe — concludes that starting in the womb, children's developing respiratory systems are particularly at risk from five airborne pollutants associated with fracking and drilling.

France upholds fracking ban

A law prohibiting fracking for shale gas has been upheld by France's constitutional court, citing environmental protection.
France's constitutional court has upheld a ban on hydraulic fracturing, ruling that the law against the energy exploration technique known as "fracking" is a valid means of protecting the environment.
