Community Market Survey - Please help us!
We are working on a plan to open a community shop in Canaan that would sell locally produced fruits, vegetables, preserves, baked goods, poultry, meat, dairy products, and other farm products, as well as local arts and crafts. In the off season, the market would offer produce from other areas. A cafe would also be included that makes us of the local products, and offers them to the public. This Market would run in conjunction with the current outdoor farmers' market, and would not replace the market. It would include many of the same vendors.
Your feedback on this market will help us greatly. Please take a moment to fill out a survey by clicking on this link. Thank you!
REMINDER!
THE NEXT FARMERS' COOPERATIVE MEETING IS SUNDAY, JUNE 5 AT 1:30 AT THE OLD MVHI OFFICE ACROSS FROM THE VILLAGE GREEN (AFTER THE NORMAL FARMERS' MARKET)
ANOTHER REMINDER!
FARMERS' MARKET IS SUNDAY FROM 10 UNTIL 1 ON THE GREEN.

Cemeteries, Lawns and Fields
We have recently made a personnel change in Cemeteries and Government Buildings that will require us to hire a new employee. The job description includes the mowing of all Town properties. As a result of the vacancy, the fields, cemeteries and lawns were not mowed in a timely manner over the last two weeks. We understand that this made the Town look unkept and was disrespectful to our loved ones. We apologize for this.
The plan is to start recruitment for a new person next week. This process will take four to six weeks. In the meantime, we are hiring part-time people to cover the needed maintenance. Hopefully, the fields are starting to look more normal.

Water Line Break
Last weekend, Bob Scott and John Coffey strung a new, temporary water line across Indian River by the horseshoe pits. The line is temporary and will have to be replaced before winter. We are trying to obtain permission to permanently hang the water line from the bridge. If this is not possible, we will have to secure a stream bed alteration permit to bury the water line below Indian River. This will take a few months. As you can see in the picture above, the old water line was in terrible shape. We have had two large leaks in the last three years and there were a series of smaller leaks in the system after the last repair.

You may have heard.....
GeoInsight, an engineering firm retained by us and the State of New Hampshire many years ago to manage the soil contamination at Autoware, recently drilled a whole series of test wells from one end of the Autoware property to the other. This is the first time that the entire property was drilled. There was a major surprise. The engineering firm found at least 100 gallons of gasoline on the very end of the property nearest Depot Street and Jeff Majewski's property. There is no known tank in that area. GeoInsight has previously thought that all tanks had been removed. The next step is for GeoInsight to write a plan to remediate this area. We expect to see the plan in the next few weeks and hope that the remediation will be complete by August. We are trying to complete the remediation by August so that the area can be paved. The cost of the remediation and engineering is covered by a remediation fund established by the State many years ago. The fund is more than adequate for the remediation.
