Welcome to our May Newsletter!

This month the Society of St. Yves celebrates its 25th anniversary, St. Yves was founded in 1991 and is working under the patronage of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem to help "the poor and the oppressed" according to the social doctrine of the Catholic Church. St. Yves provides gratis legal assistance, counsel and advocacy to all members of the community, irrespective of race, colour, gender or religion. Through national and international lobby and advocacy we are able to bring the light of the poor and marginalized to the attention of communities around the world in an effort to bring pressure for change.

St. Yves as well as its staff have grown over the years, the Society aspires to keep on serving its community and to defend the poor and the oppressed and to reach as many people as possible in order to achieve justice and equality.

St. Yves would like to thank its partners, donors and friends for their continual support.

Under the patronage of his Beatitude Fouad Twal St. Yves celebrates its 25th anniversary

The Society of St. Yves – Catholic Center for Human Rights celebrate its 25th Anniversary on the occasion of St. Yves day by a holy mass with the presence of his beatitude former Patriarch Emeritus Michel Sabah and under the patronage of his beatitude Fouad Twal. The celebration was attended by a number of diplomats, partners and organizations as well as Board and staff members that have worked at St. Yves along the years.

St. Yves completes its documentary film about Residency in East Jerusalem

This month, the society of St. Yves concludes filming a short documentary film about residency in Jerusalem concentrating on family unification and child registration. The film covers both legal procedures as well as the realities of two different families going through these procedures and difficult living conditions. The movie will be soon available on St. Yves' website.

EU delegation visits Beir Onah in Beit Jala

The European delegation visited Beir-Onah, where the Israeli army has started the construction of the annexation wall, the construction of the wall has been moving very quickly and the area witnessed dramatic transformation. The delegation included representatives of France, Belgium, UK, Greece, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Slovenia, Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia, Denmark, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Portugal, Lithuania, Finland and Hungary.

St. Yves holds 5 awareness raising sessions in May
As part of its awareness raising program St. Yves continues intensifying awareness raising activities amongst which awareness raising sessions. During this month sessions covered topics of house demolition, residency and the rights of people with disabilities in East Jerusalem.The sessions were held in East Jerusalem and the West Bank depending on the need reaching areas like the old city, Wadi Al Joz, Al Tur and Bani Neim.

For the second time, Palestinian family sees their E. Jerusalem home demolished by Israel
Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian family’s home in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Shufat early on Wednesday morning, marking the second time the al-Hawarin family saw their home destroyed in 15 years. “The occupation is stealing our dreams, depriving us of living safely in our own homes,” Nadia al-Hawarin told Ma’an as she looked at the ruins of her home.

Palestinian family in Jerusalem Old City faces eviction to make room for Jewish housing
An Israeli district court in Jerusalem rejected on Tuesday a Palestinian family's appeal after Israeli authorities ordered them to evacuate their house in the Saadiyya neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem's Old City, in order to make room for Jewish housing managed by the right-wing settler organization Ateret Cohanim.

Peace Now: Construction of settler building in Silwan expected to be approved
Construction of a large building for Israeli settlers in the occupied East Jerusalem area of Silwan is expected to be approved on Wednesday, Israeli settlement watchdog Peace Now said. In a statement published on Tuesday, the group said the Jerusalem Local Planning Committee was expected to approve construction for a three-story building in the heart of the Batan al-Hawa neighborhood “in one of the most densely populated areas in East Jerusalem,” where hundreds of Palestinians reside.
