A Note from Dennis Yablonsky – Chief Executive Officer, Allegheny Conference on Community Development

Dear <<First Name>>,

The Pittsburgh region got some good news last week, turning up at the top of a list of major metros offering the greatest “opportunity” for recent college graduates. Trulia.com’s new “graduate opportunity index" mashes up data from LinkedIn’s job scores and Trulia’s own housing market data to rank the country’s “most attractive” markets. Our region topped the list because Pittsburgh “had the most entry-level jobs suitable for college grads” and also ranked high in housing affordability and peer-age population. Markets east of the Mississippi tended to do better. San Francisco fared the worst.

Oh, and it’s worth noting that San Jose, the Penguins’ opponent in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, ranked 35th on the opportunity index.

We’re excited to welcome the Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce to our region in September. The chamber is bringing a delegation here on an intercity visit, studying best practices in our region’s successes in creating a high quality of place – they’re especially interested in our urban core. Since the region hosted the G-20 summit in 2009 we’ve hosted about 40 of these visiting delegations from across the country.

Inflection Point Outreach

All of this will help our effort to Elevate, Retain and Attract the skilled people we need to meet the projected demand for 340,000 workers over the next decade, as the Baby Boom generation retires and new jobs are created. But good P.R. won’t be enough by itself. It’s going to take a concerted and coordinated effort by employers across the region to build and maintain a robust pipeline of talent. That’s one of the key conclusions of “Inflection Point,” our new report on the future of work in our region produced by Bill Demchak’s workforce committee thanks to a lot of hard work by Dmitri Shiry’s working group.

Beginning this month, we’re taking the report on the road throughout the Pittsburgh region. We will be sharing county-specific information with business leaders, policymakers, educators and economic development practitioners. Please take a look at the attached schedule of briefings and join us – or send the appropriate person from your organization. The report provides information that can help you plan for your organization’s future workforce needs, as well as help us develop strategies to meet the demand.

Strengthening Communities

The Allegheny Conference is committed to connecting people to opportunity throughout our region. Connecting them to education, training and jobs is part of it, and so is improving our transportation infrastructure and systems and strengthening our communities.

You can see for yourself the progress being made in communities participating in our Strengthening Communities Partnership in Knoxville and Homewood with a series of upcoming events. The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is celebrating the re-opening of its Knoxville branch with a special preview reception on Thursday, June 23 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information on the reception, please click here. If you can’t make the preview reception, there will be a community wide celebration on Saturday, June 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can find more information here.

The Allegheny Conference is organizing a guided hike through Mount Oliver / Knoxville on Tuesday, June 14 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. You can register for the hike and find more information here. We are also organizing a bicycle tour of improvements under way in Homewood that will take place in August. Please look for more information on the Homewood tour to arrive in your inboxes shortly.

We are pleased to see that the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority has awarded grants to implement green infrastructure solutions to projects in Homewood and Knoxville, participants in our Strengthening Communities Partnership.

Corporate Equity & Inclusion Roundtable

Last year, members of the Allegheny Conference joined more than 200 business, government, university and nonprofit leaders for an exchange of ideas on how to increase diversity in employment and supplier opportunities for minorities throughout the Pittsburgh region. This year’s Corporate Equity & Inclusion Roundtable, titled "Pebbles of Possibilities for Ladders to Opportunities," will be held on Monday, June 20 from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Duquesne University Power Center. You can register and find more information about the event here

As always, thank you for your support of the Allegheny Conference and for your commitment to our region.

Sincerely,
Dennis Yablonsky
