Weekly Update: June 3, 2016

Our Mission
The Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center, a 501(c)(3) public charity, provides space for education and networking.  We create initiatives to promote peace, human rights, social and environmental justice.
Notes from the Desk
Thank you to everyone who attended the "Wear Orange" event at the PJC yesterday. A photo of individuals at our event and posted on Facebook garnished the ire of gun advocates across the country who posted vile comments and even went so far as to verbally attack the Center and the work done by it. Interestingly enough, this is the most viewed and most active post the PJC has ever had! We are trying to look at it with a touch of amusement, but I'd like to take this opportunity to *briefly* remind you about what Gun Sense Community Conversations (which meets at the PJC) does (and does not do)! First of all, this is not a group that wants all guns to be taken away. It is a group that aims (no pun intended) to bring together individuals with differing views on the gun control debate. We have brought together gun owners, gun-control advocates, NRA members (of which we are!), and folks in the middle-ground to better understand each other, our stances, and current issues in this realm. And we are proud of this fact. So we thank you for the continued support of the Center, especially in times where a simple picture online can make it feel like it's raining fire on your small, helpful non-profit!
On another note, I'd like to mention that today at noon starts the beginning of my sabbatical from the PJC for the summer. My farm and family need my focus and so I will spend the summer with the kids, goats, and bees. You'll still see me around town, and I've asked our last intern, Katherine Johnson, to fill in for me for the summer. I leave you in her more than capable hands for all issues you may need assistance with! Come and chat with her and see what you can do at the PJC and how the PJC can help you out with your programs and interests! See you in the fall! -Erin
Quote of the Week:

“A mature person is one who does not think only in absolutes, who is able to be objective even when deeply stirred emotionally, who has learned that there is both good and bad in all people and in all things, and who walks humbly and deals charitably with the circumstances of life, knowing that in this world no one is all knowing and therefore all of us need both love and charity.”
― Eleanor Roosevelt
