In the wake of recent events in Orlando, Oasis is so thankful to all of you for caring for our young people no matter who they are or what they believe.

Sunday’s sermon from Oak Grove Presbyterian Church presented by Pastor Bill eloquently reflects on the tragedy in Orlando and the importance of inclusion in our community.

A section of a prayer from Oak Grove’s LGBTQ alliance:

“We pray for acceptance of all your children, those of every creed and color, every religion and economic background, every gender identity and sexual orientation. You told us to love our neighbor; let us follow that command and love all of our neighbors. Let us see differences as testaments to diversity and the beautiful breadth of your creation, rather than dividing lines that fracture it.”
June is Pride Month

June is a time when LGBTQ folks celebrate Pride all over the country. In the Twin Cities, we celebrate Pride every year on the last weekend of June.

The momentous changes in laws and policies achieved in recent years to give LGBTQ folks equal rights and more protection from discrimination are certainly things to be celebrated. And yet, LGBTQ folks still struggle to find safe places to exist, thrive, and to be accepted by their peers. For young folks, the struggle to find a sense of belonging can be even harder. This, among many other reasons, is why Oasis for Youth is so committed to creating a safe place for young folks who identify as LGBTQ, and for those who are in need of a supportive place to find their identities.

That means Oasis celebrated Pride right here in Bloomington at the drop-in center! But this is not just a temporary celebration. We believe it is so important for youth to have a place to feel safe, seen, and accepted year round. Through our practices and policies, youth know from the very minute they come through our doors that all folks, especially those who identify as LGBTQ, have a safe place at Oasis for Youth.

From all of us at Oasis, please enjoy a safe and happy Pride month!

Oasis Welcomes New Staff: Julie Brekken

Julie Brekken joins Oasis as our first development manager.  Julie learned about Oasis at an event for VEAP and immediately joined the committee planning for our Building Futures event for our 5-year anniversary last year.  One of the great attributes Julie demonstrated on the sponsorship and auction committee was her willingness to ask anyone for anything. Julie has 15 years experience in providing key administrative support for senior executives at Fortune 500 companies and was an important player in the launching of a new product within Medtronic.

In this role to help ensure the financial well-being of Oasis for Youth, Julie will implement our first donor management system, lead our event planning and annual appeals, manage grant deadlines and reporting, and support our executive director’s work.

Julie joined Oasis for Youth in early June.  So far, one of the things that impresses her is the people she’s met who work for Cornerstone and the Bloomington Public Schools.  “Even though they spend each day working with people in situations that are difficult, they are so enthusiastic about their jobs, “ says Julie.  “It’s inspiring.”

What you might not guess about Julie is that she has a blended family with seven children.  Most of them are grown now, so she has the ability to take on a larger role at Oasis and wants to help make events happen and leverage her organizational skills.  She also looks forward to raising money so Oasis can continue to do the good work that has so inspired her.   Please give Julie a warm welcome when you meet her.

From Our Executive Director
Greetings,

Summer is upon us and we are almost half way through 2016 and Oasis is getting busier day by day. We have served 230 youth so far this year, 15 more youth than all of last year and we haven’t even made it to our peak summer months! Summers are always busier—it is a season of turmoil for our youth with less stability because school is out and youth are more likely to become homeless.

Oasis is able to coordinate services, leverage strategic partnerships and develop cutting edge programming to improve young people’s lives. We are excited to offer support services at the Mall of America® and truly believe this will be an innovative solution to employment that will yield tremendous results. Young people need to have someone who is in their corner in all areas of their lives, but especially in employment.  Someone to help them gain the skills they need to obtain and, most importantly, maintain employment. The solution to poverty related issues isn’t just getting a job, it is about succeeding and growing in careers.

Oasis is part of a community that cares about our youth. Bloomington Public Schools recently received a grant from Minnesota Department of Education to address the needs of homeless and highly mobile students, focusing on increasing awareness and coordinating resources for students. As a community, it is crucial to receive more support, but we are always saddened when there are increased numbers of students who need our services and we project that poverty will continue to rise in our community.

However, we are all part of the solution by offering innovative supports and strategic partnerships to invest in our young people at crucial stages in their lives to help them on a path to achieve their dreams.

In the midst of an uncertain world, as part of a community, I am happy to say we are offering certainty to youth by caring and advocating for them and helping to create a world that believes in young people.

Thank you,

Nicole Mills
