ARC Welcomes Financial Education Leader to Advisory Council

Our coalition is growing again! Zynda Sellers, a financial education leader from North Carolina has decided to join our fight to maintain consumer legal funding as an option for everyday people.

Sellers is the fourth member to join the Council in the last several months, and the group's first financial education professional. As the current General Counsel for Money Management International (MMI), her expertise is going to be essential as the Council moves forward with the development of a financial literacy program for consumers to be unveiled later this year.

ARC's volunteer Advisory Council is comprised of diverse stakeholders including academics, civil rights defenders and private citizens that provide strategic direction, public policy insight, and leadership on matters pertinent to the consumer legal funding industry.

ARC has been hard at work this spring pushing for legislation that prioritizes consumer protection and preserves consumer choice. Because, when it comes to consumer legal funding, smart bills do both.

As many legislatures are wrapping up their work for the session, ARC is marking some major wins for consumers.

We've made strides in Indiana, where the Governor has
signed a new law confirming that legal funding is the purchase of an asset. Vermont, too, passed legislation confirming it yet again and ensuring access to the constituents of that state after comprehensive study of the issue. Proposed legislation that would have restricted consumer access failed to move forward in Missouri, Alabama, and others.

But, there is still work to be done. As Kathleen Wisnewski, from Tennessee, brought to light in her
letter to the editor, there are still people who struggle to gain access to consumer legal funding when they need it most. We will be fighting for people like Kathleen in the months to come.

You can read more our work through our ARC WebsiteBlog, and Newsroom.

Sincerely,

Rob

In his own words: On a Sunday morning, I was driving to church with my wife and two daughters when another driver slid through a stop sign and smashed into us. Thank goodness, my wife and daughters were okay. But my knee was hurt badly. The insurance company for the driver who caused the crash offered me $250 for my injuries. That's when I realized I needed an attorney to get a fair settlement.

I have a good job at a hospital and pay my bills on time. But it's impossible to be prepared for the financial strain that comes with missing work and having medical bills pour in. We fell behind on the rent, the electricity bill, the phone and water bills. Everything was about to be shut off. My wife looked at me and said, "What are we going to do?" To tell you the truth, I was worried too.

That's when I turned to Consumer Legal Funding. It helped me catch up on the bills and keep things going. Man, it was a big relief. If we hadn't received that help, I just don't know what would have happened to us. Consumer Legal Funding helps people. This service needs to be available for other people to use if and when they need it.
