Expanding MATs subject to ‘rigurous’ health checks, says National Schools Commissioner 

National Schools Commissioner Sir David Carter and Ofsted Chief Sir Michael Wilshaw gave evidence on Multi-Academy Trusts during a much anticipated Education Select Committee session. Sir David discussed his plans to perform ‘health checks’ on MATs that want to take on more schools, saying they will focus on standards and improvement.

Sponsors lose control of 119 failing academies
Schools Northeast
England's schools commissioner Sir David Carter told the Commons Education Committee 119 academies had been "re-brokered" as a last resort. Some academies were performing no better than the failing schools from which they had taken over, he told MPs.But he stressed the academies his team were most concerned about were being challenged and supported to improve.

One in six families misses top secondary school choice

The figures showed Gateshead had the biggest fall in parents getting their first choice of secondary school, down from 91.5% in 2015 to 82.8%.
But a spokesman for the council said the DfE had not included children who had gone to Emmanuel College, which is partly funded by business donors, and which would have meant 90.5% got their first choice.

Nathan French and Peter Bakare are both professional athletes and 2012 Olympic Volleyball Players. The duo have played together for many years starting their careers in the same volleyball squad, all the way through to the Olympic Games. Nathan and Pete are passionate about sport and helping children to see the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Schools Northeast   Scientists say that up to 80% of students’ choices of A-level subjects is down to genetic influence with environmental factors such as home life, accounting for 23% of the choice at most. The authors of a new King's College study claim that the findings support the idea that children should have greater choice in what they study during their school years, together with a more personalised approach to their education.
