From the Committee

This week we were saddened to hear the news of Timothy Peter Michael Colley's passing. Tim was the SPOC FC secretary for many year working quietly to make this club what it is today. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

A lot of positives leading in to the bye with both the A and C grade having convincing wins against SMOSH West Lakes and the B grade having their best game for many weeks just falling short of a win.

All grades are well placed for the latter half of the year.

The C grade continue to go from strength to strength and are sitting nicely second on the ladder. The numbers on the track and available for game day continue to be strong and this is a real credit to everybody involved.

The B grade keep developing and will certainly benefit with a few of the injured players coming back in to the A and B grade. With some experienced players in to help the younger group I am sure we will see some very positive performances over the coming weeks.

With the win against SMOSH the A grade are back in to the five and without wanting to state the obvious we just need to perform at the level we did last game and we should not only hold our spot on the ladder but possibly climb a spot or two over the coming period. It is great to have some of the injured players back not the least Jordan Lockwood in the ruck. Christian Calabrese slotted in nicely to the team and showed his class and experience first up. The A grade look well balanced at the minute and the confidence is back which augers well for the upcoming games.

Speaking of class and experience well done to Toby Schulz for not only being part of the winning SA Amateur side against the VICS but also being rewarded with best on ground honours. This was the first time for a number of years that it was open age which made the win and Toby's effort especially good against a strong Victorian side.

This week we are back at home with the A and B grade taking on Scotch OC on the Caterer and the C grade up against Flinders Park on the Wilson.

Scotch are 4th on the ladder in the A grade so it really is a crucial game for us.

Weather looking pretty good so we look forward to seeing you out there on Saturday arvo.

ROUND 8 REVIEW VS SMOSH WEST LAKES

SMOSH WEST LAKES: 6.2.38
SPOC C GRADE LEGENDS: 10.11.71

GPS TRACKER RESULTS:
N. LOPEZ - 13.5 KM
W. LYON - 12.5 KM
N. BAILEY - 9.5 KM

Round 8 was the round the C grade legends furthered our strangle hold on being the most technologically advanced side at the club, with the introduction of our GPS trackers on midfielders. Last week we were berated for not handing in all of our home guernseys after our game against Gepps Cross, little did our property steward know that Nic Bailey had popped into Office works bought a couple wetsuit pencil cases, cut them up and fashioned them into pouches that were sewn into the back of guernseys to add GPS trackers to follow distance covered through out matches. The boys were very excited about tracking how far they had covered, comparing one another's results. Ironically, it was Bails, who suffered a groin injury and was restricted to full forward from half time onwards and thus severely hampering his results. Sucked in Lord floater (only kicks floaters).

Another game where we started with promise controlling the play but were not damaging on the scoreboard. 5 scoring shots compared to the oppositions 2 would generally account for a solid lead at quarter time but not to be the case. Our 5 straight behinds and SMOSH's 2 straight goals made our wasteful start all the more frustrating, the only thing worse than our first quarter kicking was our second quarter carrying on with the same trend where we kicked another 4 behinds before getting our first one through the big sticks. The score at half time read SMOSH 4.2.26 to SPOC 1.9.15.

Although the scoreboard wasn't on our side our relentless effort and continual forward entries gave us confidence we would eventually hit the goals tally hard. We were kickstarted in the 3rd quarter by Jock Forbes who in his first game returning from injury was superb, Forbesy was placed on a half back flank at the start of the third quarter where as side we were looking for more drive, he managed to amass a number of possessions very quickly and started the turnaround in fortune for us. Forbesy's work in a 5 to 10 minute window really stamped our authority on the match.

Adam Pinches, Will Lyon, Zak Egerton and Nick Lopez lead from the front in the midfield and across half forward as the more they got their hand on the ball the better we looked, taking it upon themselves to kick much needed goals and show their class. The tide was turning and turning fast, we started to play with more freedom and our run and carry started to make SMOSH look very tired.

Co-captain Nick Cook presented well kicking 3 goals along with Richie Milne and Fraser Whitehead who in recent weeks are proving to be handful for the opposition in front of goals.

Cameron Virgin was trialled down back with much success, Virg spoiled, marked and along with Nik Byrne killed numerous entries. The run and spread particularly in our second half can be attributed much to these two pairing well with Jordan Caminiti as we placed the game firmly on our terms.

Toby Pym, played another incredible game, with countless bounding efforts, high marks, strong tackles and showed pure guts and determination to will us to victory. Pymmy has put together some very good football of late and is putting the rest of the team on his shoulders and carrying them with him. A number of players and bystanders get a real thrill out of seeing Pymmy play well and boy he is in a purple patch.

A stressful day from the sidelines but all is well that ends well, another strong win against a contender at the top end of the ladder. Well done to all.
