4) PTSD Talk and Book Signing

PTSD gets alot of press yet few of us really understand it. If you or someone you love is either past or present military, police or first responder, then this talk will be of great interest !

Dr John Whelan is a psychologist specializing in the treatment of PTSD for serving and retired military, police and first responders. Dr Whelan is also an accomplished author on the topic and has just released his 2nd book "Ghost in the Ranks". Dr Whelan will be at the Haviland, to shed some light on this topic.

Here is an excerpt of what you can expect:
"Military members are taught a mental skillset to help them manage their internal emotional worlds allowing them to do extraordinary things. Unfortunately, while ingrained military training prepares our men and women for action as capable soldiers, when taken out of context, this same training can be misinterpreted as signs of mental illness,"

Monday, June 20

5) PEIANC Walk for World Refugee Day

Date and Time: Monday, June 20, 12:00 noon
Meeting Place: Province House, Charlottetown (facing Great George Street)
Route: down Great George Street, right onto Water Street, ending at 49 Water Street, at PEI ANC Office

On Monday, June 20th, the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada invites you to gather on the steps of Province House at 12:00 noon. After a short presentation on refugee issues, we will walk together from there to PEIANC office at 49 Water Street for a brief reception.

The number of forcibly displaced persons worldwide has reached 59.5 million. Last year, according to UNHCR, 51% of refugees were under 18 years old. This is the highest figure for child refugees in more than a decade.

Joining PEI ANC for our World Refugee Day Walk is a rare opportunity for Islanders to show solidarity with the resilient, inspiring people who have been forced to leave their homes and endure a host of emotional and physical hardships. PEI ANC acknowledges the impact that war and conflict has on the lives of refugees, and the importance of family reunification. The Association is proud to be a part of the resettlement of refugees.  Everyone is welcome to this community event.

13) PEI Mutual Festival of Small Halls

June 12–25
Various locations

The PEI Mutual Festival of Small Halls takes place in venues across PEI June 12 to 25. It’s an annual music, dance and storytelling festival returning for its eighth season. The festival draws international artists to the Island each year.

This festival showcases traditional Irish, Scottish, and Acadian music and dance, as well as tall tales from Island storytellers, in over 40 venues across the Island. The festival brings Island artists who are often touring the world back into the rural communities where many of them began their careers. This year 70 percent of the festival’s artists are Islanders whose musical and storytelling traditions were encouraged and instilled in their hearts from a young age in these very communities. They will play alongside artists from as near as Cape Breton, to as far as the UK, Australia and British Columbia. (Excerpt from Buzz article)
