Colorado AD George gets a three-year contract extension that could keep him in Boulder through the end of June 2021. Includes a base salary bump from $700K to $754,314. Chancellor DiStefano: "Just like our student-athletes, Rick George is performing at a high level and his accomplishments reflect positively on the university. During the past three years, Rick has exceeded everyone's expectations in fundraising and facility upgrades." Buffzone.com says George's new pay mark is second among Pac-12 public school ADs & comes with bonuses for perfect APR scores ($25K per program), $100K if student-athlete GPAs outpace undergrad GPAs, $150K for reaching fundraising goals in '19, '20 & '21, as well as $50K opportunities for boosting FB & MBB attendance. - link
Former Baylor FB HC Briles says he won't settle the pending lawsuits in which he's named & he wants separate representation from the university in the matters. Personal legal counsel Cannon: "The conclusion is inescapable that the motive of Baylor and the Board of Regents was to use its head football coach and the Baylor athletic department as a camouflage to disguise and distract from its own institutional failure to comply." Cannon also wants all documents connected to the cases, including the full report from Pepper Hamilton. Attorney Zalkin, who is representing one of the females who has filed charges, "That's some infighting between them. We'll let them figure out who is representing who." - link
San Jose Mercury News reporter Wilner releases the second part of his conversation with Pac-12 Commish Scott, this one on the state of Pac-12 Networks. Scott says the current setup of 100% ownership, despite some potholes, is the "optimal model for us" & specifically points to "the longer-term view." "Longer-term" could mean holding strong to the current position until 2024 when the conference's Tier I rights are also open for negotiation. Wilner finishes by doing some back-of-the-envelope math on what kind of cash could be produced if an equity stake were sold in the Networks now & comes up with a rough figure of $33M per school. Wilner also joined in Turnkey Search's '1.Question' segment below to dig in further on this topic. - link
Yesterday in this space was an article from The Hollywood Reporter with comments from WME-IMG co-boss Emanuel on his company's push into China & today is an entry on reports of the fashion-sports-entertainment firm submitting a $4.1B offer for UFC alongside Chinese conglomerate, Dalian Wanda Group. WME-IMG, plus Dalian, looks to also be joined by Kraft Group of New England Patriots note, as well as Tencent Holdings, which is "ESPN's official digital partner in the region." The WME-IMG group bid has been matched, according to ESPN's Rovell, by China Media Capital. No comment from UFC. - link
Rutgers AD Hobbs continues to be in the news, this time on the development of his strategic plan for the Scarlet Knights. A leadership team of 10 to 15 individuals from around the department will be assembled to begin discussions, followed by a survey distributed to everyone in Athletics. Student-athletes will be at the core of all plans. Hobbs: "I think the timing of this (strategic plan) is perfect. If we kicked this off seven months ago, people might not have fully bought in. But we've done enough things now in seven months where people see that I didn't come in to be a caretaker. I came here because there's so much potential." - link
Kentucky boss Barnhart comments on some who believe the Wildcats aren't doing enough for the 'common fan,' specifically in connection to the renovations to Commonwealth Stadium. "You can never do enough. I’ve learned that in this business. You’ll never ever do enough...There’s a give and a take on everything we do. You’ve gotta have revenue produced in your stadium that allows your football program to grow. Football programs grow through premium seating, those clubs and suites -- that’s part of the equation...We’ve been hearing that for so many years and that’s why we get defensive - because we’ve cared for a long time, we’ve just had to wait our turn." - link
Minnesota AD Coyle with a Q&A, starts by noting he been doing a lot of listening & spending time with outgoing former Interim AD Goetz to fully grasp what was going on. Still getting to know the staff, but calls them "all good people." Says "donors have been very generous to me" so far, but stops short of pinpointing a number for fundraising to date. Message to all HCs has been, "What can I do to help your program?" On a replacement for Goetz, "We have not done that. Beth, as you know, is a special person. I’m so appreciative of her." - link
Towson AD Leonard has led the Tigers for three years and is now working with his third President. Says he's ready for challenges & changes in the landscape with the widening gap between 'Power 5' & 'Group of 5' a key topic. Leonard: "I think there will be one more wave of a handful of schools moving into the Power Five, maybe Boise State or BYU out West. Maybe Houston or [the University of Connecticut]. They'll get to 67 to 72 schools, and that'll be it. And that's where I think there's an opportunity for Towson, because when [the Group of Five] gets strangled out [of the FBS], there are going to be universities -- the UConns, the UMasses, the Temples, the Memphises, the East Carolinas -- who will have to regroup. When they do, that gives us an opportunity to be a part of that regrouping. Or, as a university, we say that's just not the game we're going to play, we're going to stay status quo. Well, that's my concern, because in life, if you're maintaining the status quo, you're falling behind. My concern is that is if we do that, we become de facto Division II." Lots more, including HC perspectives from a number of team leaders. - link
Despite push back from some, the Board of Trustees at Arkansas approved the $160M renovation to Razorback Stadium yesterday. AD Long: "We are pleased to be moving forward with this important project that will improve the game day experience for all Razorback fans visiting Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. We appreciate the due diligence shown by the Board of Trustees in this process and are appreciative of their support. Every fan that attends a game will benefit from the enhancements throughout the stadium." Populous, Polk Stanley, Legends and CDI-Hunt are all involved in the project. - link
FoxSports.com's Mandel with an interesting mailbag, believes it's highly unlikely the Big 12 would push out Baylor given its recent issues, notes the increased focus on AD hires these days, not as confident as Tim Brando that Notre Dame will eventually become a full ACC member & mentions UConn as a natural fit if the league wanted to expand. Also, "What I'd like to see happen one day is for the Group of 5 to band together and form their own playoff separate from the College Football Playoff. It would give those schools more relevance, but more importantly, I believe fans of those schools might become more invested knowing at the start of the season they're playing for more than just the Sun Belt championship." More. - link

Legal: Former Ohio State FB stand-out student-athlete Ray Griffin talks about why he's part of a lawsuit against the NCAA & Big Ten on the concussions front. Griffin was told odds are very high he has CTE via a Boston U. study. On a potential settlement, "I know it's not going to be perfect. But it's got to be something where everyone is at least satisfied, something that shows the NCAA, the Big Ten, college football knows that they did harm and they're admitting they did harm and they want to make it right with you." More. (link); Also, from CBSSports.com's Solomon: "Court filing shows Derek Sheely vs. NCAA wrongful death lawsuit is in settlement process. Trial scheduled for Monday is postponed" (link).
NCAA sanctions for Norfolk State include two year's probation for the department & a combined 97 wins stripped from six different sports due to athlete certification violations. FB loses 22 victories between 2009-2011 for what AD Miller calls a "timing error" in the certification process. In total, 48 student-athletes involved in the Level 2 violation, for which NSU will pay a $5K self-imposed fine. Per the 10-page NCAA report: "The institution failed to monitor the conduct and the administration of its athletic program in that the institution failed to establish proper systems and safeguards for ensuring that student-athletes’ eligibility was certified according to NCAA eligibility standards." - link
The University of Alabama System's Board of Trustees gives the go ahead on UAB's $22M plan for a new football complex & outdoor practice facility. FB HC Clark: "I think that commitment of hey, this is real. We're doing this and we're doing this in a first-class manor." AD Ingram says it shows the board's commitment to UAB athletics. Construction could start late this summer, with a target completion date prior to the 2017 season. Legacy has already given $4.2M for naming rights. - link
UConn FB HC Diaco and his wife, Julie, announced they will give $250K to the school to help the $46M construction for men's and women's soccer, baseball and softball facilities. Diaco: "Our UConn football family is very fortunate to call The Burton Family Football Complex and Mark R. Shenkman Training Center our home. These facilities are among the finest in the nation and fully serve the needs of our football student-athletes. I want all Husky student-athletes and my fellow coaches to be able to enjoy the same caliber of facilities, which they richly deserve." - link
Niagara selects Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment as its multimedia and corporate sponsorships rights partner. No financial or timing details released, but AD Gray inputs: "Van Wagner will be a prolific partner and represent our department in a positive and productive manner in the corporate community. We have always valued our corporate partners and appreciate their investment in our success. This new relationship will strengthen our commitment to being an engaged member of our community." - link
Montana State's new AD, Leon Costello, already getting acclimated with his coaches, staff, fans & donors by sharing his vision for the Bobcats with a trip to Great Falls on just his second day on the job. Costello: "That’s a lot of what I’m doing here in the first couple weeks and months is really getting to know people, getting the pulse of the place. Really what makes people tick and why they’re so passionate about being Bobcats." - link

Facebook & T-Mobile working to get the former onto Binge On, the latter's program for customers to watch mobile video from partner services without using up data. Netflix, HBO, ESPN and most recently YouTube are already part of Binge On. Move could also help Facebook address negative feedback from it's Free Basics program. No comment from either camp.- link

Money, money, money: Michigan AD Manuel indicates projected revenue of $161.8M compared to $161M in expenses for 2016-17, which is better for the Wolverines than former Interim AD Hackett's $7.9M deficit projection. (link); More from Ann Arbor as Manuel says that FB's 38-satellite camps tour will run Michigan approximately $350K (link); Georgia Tech expects a $2.4M deficit for FY17 due in part to a change in MBB coaching staff, repairs to Bobby Dodd Stadium & behind-pace ticket sales. AD Bobinski not overly concerned (link).
Denton Record-Chronicle's Vito continues his series on the AD hiring process at North Texas, this time it's a look at how to set expectations for the struggling MBB program. HC Benford is headed into the final year of his contract, which means a new boss will have a big decision on his or her hands, though it could also allow a new AD to bring in their own hire for the 2017-18 campaign & beyond. Vito says a review of Mean Green Softball is also needed after a 22-33 (5-19) season in the third for HC Kee. - link
Beer at ballgames: There won't be any for sale at Boise State or Idaho FB pregames this year as the Idaho State Board of Education reverses course & declines their previous permitting of beer and wine sales to fans. Both schools requested an extension of the policy that was approved just last June by the board, to no avail. Broncos AD Apsey on how it will impact 'The Huddle' area, "We will work closely with the Board to identify acceptable policies and procedures moving forward, and from there, determine the future of the event." - link
Sports Illustrated's Gardner with a lengthy piece on how Charleston Southern Baseball student-athlete Singleton is coping with the loss of his mother in the Charleston church shootings one year ago. Recalls wanting to be the one to break the news to his two younger siblings. Just this month able to emotionally sell his mother's house, which has sat vacant since the incident. Credits his mother for his strength, character & faith today. - link
Around Higher Ed: Texas Tech names its provost, Lawrence Schovanec, as the next school president (link); Possibly behind paywall as the Wall Street Journal digs in on Presidential compensation. George Mason professor Finkelstein: "The dirty little secret of presidential contracts is that a huge proportion of their compensation doesn’t show up as annual salary, it’s hidden in terms of deferred compensation, supplemental benefits and other kinds of perks." Lots more. (link); Consultant John Isaacson for the Missouri open president spot says the search is going "surprisingly well" with a better yes-to-no ratio than expected on people targeted for the job (link); Florida Prez Fuchs agrees with outgoing AD Foley on alcohol sales only being permitted in premium areas (link); The Ohio State mascot will not march in the upcoming Ohio Pride Parade, as spirit team coaches cite safety concerns for the event after the tragedy in Orlando last weekend (link).
Also noticed: Memphis set to execute a MBB select-a-seat today in an effort to drive ticket sales for new HC Smith. Deputy AD Alnutt says marks are already improving with the installation of IMG Learfield Ticket Solutions (link); Coastal Carolina may have figured out a way around the process with the Commission on Higher Education to get approved for its Brooks Stadium expansion, instead turns to the state's Joint Bond Review Committee (link); Columbia University selects newcomer Exemplar Associates to manage trademark licensing domestically (link); SEC moves: Hires Leibovitz away from the AAC to serve as Assoc. Commish for MBB, also, Mark Whitehead is the new MBB Coordinator of Officials (link, link); Temple HC Dunphy & St. Joe's boss Martelli named to NABC ad hoc group to review the NCAA Tourney (link); Here's the full doc on Nebraska's athletic department review (link); Pretty interesting graphic on market share in DI by website host. SIDEARM leads the way with 38% (link).
