MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
More than two weeks ago, we awoke to news of the senseless, horrific shooting deaths of 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the victims and their friends and families, and to the survivors of this heinous hate crime against the LGBTQ community. I want to emphasize my support for the part our LGBTQ students, staff and faculty play in strengthening our campus and school communities and their commitment to diversity and inclusion at UMD.

Center for Health Equity Partners in One Stop Health Center
The Mona Center, a partnership among the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity in the School of Public Health, Catholic Charities of Washington, and Doctor’s Community Hospital, will provide health and wellness services for the community of Temple Hills, Md. and create hands-on learning opportunities for UMD students. 




SPH Alum Urges Spring 2016 Grads to Become 'Health-Makers'
Mr.  Andre Blackman (B.S., '05), a strategic communications and engagement professional with deep ties to the public health, healthcare, technology and social media landscapes, told UMD SPH graduates, "The public health field is primed for innovation and entrepreneurship, but the upcoming generation of public health leaders must first have 'the courage to create and do.'"

How Black Mothers Guide Teens to Cope with Racial Discrimination
A new study on communication in black families explores how mothers tailor their responses to their teenagers’ experiences with racial discrimination -- a task that is central to healthy development in black children.




 

"Obamacare" Coverage for Young Adults Eases Burden of Mental Health Costs

The ACA has helped protect young adults from burdensome out-of-pocket health costs, and allowed them to use mental health services when they need them. The savings were most significant among young adults from racial and ethnic minority groups.

Preventing Childhood Obesity Through School-Based “Wellness Champions” 
A large new USDA funded project will target childhood obesity in Maryland through the promotion of healthier school environments. The intervention will develop leader/advocates among school teachers and students who will become “wellness champions” in their schools.
 

Parents’ Perceptions of Neighborhood Environments Affect Children’s Active Play

The Built Environment and Active Play (BEAP) Study found that parental perceptions of neighborhood environments in Washington, DC were linked to how physically active their children were on a daily basis.


UMD School of Public Health Partners with University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center
Dr. Cheryl Holt, professor in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health, co-leads the Population Science Program for the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, which just received a prestigious designation from the National Cancer Institute.

Remembering Mel Williams (PhD, '68)
Mel Williams, a champion long-distance runner and prominent sports performance researcher whose work led to the International Olympic Committee’s ban on blood doping, died last month of bone cancer in his Virginia home. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland Department of Kinesiology.


Craig Holden (PhD '15) Receives Outstanding Dissertation Award from Academy Health
Academy Health honored Department of Health Services Administration graduate Craig Holden for his outstanding research examining disparities in the use of preventive health services by different racial and ethnic groups.  





Stephanie Cork, doctoral student in the Department of Kinesiology, with Dean Jane ClarkTheresa Smith Named Runner-Up in UMD Three-Minute Thesis Competition
Kinesiology doctoral student Theresa Smith was named the runner-up in the 2016 UMD Three-Minute Thesis Competition for her accessible presentation on her dissertation research on how “Walking Protects Brain Connections Destroyed in the Alzheimer’s Disease Progression.”


Danielle Martinez (BS, '11) Performs with Royal Caribbean Acrobatics Show
From Gymkana to America's Got Talent to sailing and flipping on the seven seas, Danielle Martinez (B.S., '11) is making her mark as a talented acrobatic performer with Royal Caribbean and has just set sail for another 10 months.
