Indian child labour linked to glittering cosmetics and more

SOMO Service’s report Beauty and a Beast reveals the uncomfortable truth behind the glittering world of mica – a mineral used in shimmery cosmetics, shiny car paints and other products. The children’s rights group Terre des Hommes commissioned SOMO Services to carry out an investigation into the mica mining in India.

Electronics industry using gold mined by children

The Stop Child Labour Coalition commissioned SOMO Services to conduct a series of reports on child labour in gold mining. The electronics industry is the third largest buyer of gold used in the production of mobile phones, computers and other consumer electronics.

The SOMO Quick Scan is a comprehensive investigation into a company and is one of the key research specialisations that SOMO Services can offer. The methodology used in the SOMO Quick Scan is also the basis of SOMO’s approach to investigating how companies are organised, how they operate and how they are financed.

SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC PROCUREMENT

Short circuit on the green energy market

SOMO Services was asked by Greenpeace to investigate from where the 390 Dutch government municipalities, responsible for lighting roads and other public buildings and spaces, buy their energy and to assess how much is green or sustainable. Greenpeace used this research as the basis to launch a hard-hitting campaign about sustainable public procurement calling on Dutch local governments to own up to the fact that much of their “so-called” sustainable energy consumption is green wash.

In brief

Big companies, low rates is a SOMO Services study, commissioned by the biggest Dutch union FNV, to test whether over the past decade the largest 150 Dutch companies succeeded in reducing their effective tax rates and if so, by how much.
SOMO Services carried out a network analyses for Oxfam Novib, that demonstrates how tax consultancy companies and the academic world are so intertwined that the likelihood of conflicts of interest is very high.
