Shakopee School Board Business Meeting

June 13, 2016
The School Board celebrated the start of construction at Shakopee High School with the official groundbreaking of the expansion project. The groundbreaking was held before the business meeting at 5:00 p.m.

The regular board business meeting was held after the ground breaking. Chair Reggie Bowerman started the meeting with our Good News items (read more below) from throughout the district.

Construction Update

Assistant Superintendent John Bezek started off the meeting with a construction update on the Vaughan Field project. The project is on-time and on-budget. "It's going to get exciting as we start to see the fruits of the gift the public has given us," said Bezek. The first layer of the track as well as the installation of the turf are scheduled for mid-July. Construction will continue on the press box, team rooms and concession stand. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-August.

The Grand Opening for Vaughan Field will be held on the first home football game on Friday, September 9th, 2016. Please join us as we celebrate the opening of the field.

Construction on the expansion of Shakopee High School will begin by the end of the week. The construction will begin with work on the east parking lot. Bids for the entire project will open on July 14th, 2016. We will continue to update the community on the progress on this 2-year project.

Budget Finalized for 2016-17

Finance Director Mike Burlager presented the final budget for 2016-17. There was a slight change in the budget from the preliminary budget the School Board saw in May. Four maintenance projects to buildings across the district were added to the budget. The School Board approved the budget as presented. Click here to read the final budget.

The School Board also passed a resolution that will allow the SW Metro Intermediate District to levy $39,000 for long-term maintenance projects. SW Metro Intermediate District just became eligible for the revenue and was required to levy the money through approval of the member school district. The tax impact is minimal.

The Academies of Shakopee Logos Approved

Communications Specialist Denise Doran presented the work of our Shakopee CAPS students. Six months ago, our district approached the Digital Design CAPS students with the task of branding The Academies of Shakopee with logos for each academy.

The academies are:
  • Freshman Academy
  • Arts & Communications
  • Business & Entrepreneurship
  • Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Health Science
  • Human Services
  • Science & Technology
A small group of students spent more than 200 hours designing, editing and re-designing the logos for each of the academies. The students surveyed hundreds of teachers and students. They gathered feedback from district leadership, School Board members, the district's Communications Committee and other groups. Last night, the School Board approved the logos and asked that the Communications Team move forward with using the logos for The Academies of Shakopee.

The Academies of Shakopee are small learning communities of students and teachers who will be organized around areas of interest. Students will have the opportunity to connect with others who have similar aspirations and with teachers who can make meaningful connections to their plans for the future. The Academies of Shakopee will be implemented for students in grades 9-12 in the fall of 2018 when the expanded high school opens.
