Delivering the best world for animals

Hi <<First Name>>

We have some wonderful animal stories to share with you this month, including the dramatic rescue of Poppy the horse.

We invite you to explore our brand new Education hub for New Zealand kids, and to join thousands of other Kiwis as they help us fight cruelty with cupcakes.

We prosecute a woman who failed to seek veterinary treatment for her cat, causing unnecessary pain and suffering.

You also have a chance to win a GoPro HERO4 and a year's supply of pet food thanks to our national food sponsor, Purina.

Keep reading to find out how you can help deliver the best world for animals.
Woman failed to treat 10cm x 10cm wound on cat

Woman prosecuted for failing to treat 10cm x 10cm wound on cat

A Huntly woman has been sentenced for failing for several months to seek veterinary treatment for a wound on her cat’s back that eventually grew to measure 10cm x 10cm.

Due to the severity of the wound, the cat was seized by SPCA Inspectors for urgent veterinary attention. She underwent surgery, a course of antibiotics and extensive rehabilitation.

Owner Anatassia Robust, 27, acknowledged that she should have taken the cat to the vet, but that finding the time was hard. She was disqualified from owning or having control of animals of all species for five years, and ordered to pay a fine of $200, reparations of $558.46 for veterinary costs, and a $200 contribution towards legal costs. The cat was forfeited to the SPCA.

“This case clearly demonstrates what can happen if you put your pet’s health in the ‘too hard’ basket,” says SPCA New Zealand CEO Ric Odom.
Find out about the new SPCA education programme

SPCA Education Programme launched to reduce animal abuse

For the past two years, we have been researching and developing the SPCA Education Programme to teach New Zealand kids how to treat, respect and care for animals.

We are very excited that we can now offer these teaching resources to every Primary and Intermediate teacher in New Zealand to use – free of charge.

This information is also available for parents to explore with their children in the SPCA Kids' Portal.

We believe this is one of the most important steps we have taken to reduce animal abuse in the SPCA's 127 year history, and it was only possible thanks to you, our generous donors and supporters.
Foster parents come to the rescue of orphaned puppies

Foster parents come to the rescue of orphaned puppies

Fourteen puppies were recently brought to SPCA Hastings when their mum was hit and killed by a car. They were just four weeks old.

Without their mother, three of the pups sadly passed away. The eleven remaining pups needed round-the-clock feeding and care. But the Hastings centre was full and the staff were run off their feet caring for the animals they already had.

Fortunately, our SPCA Foster Parents came to the rescue and these very young pups were able to get the love, care and protection they desperately needed.

Two months on, the puppies are thriving
– and all eleven of them have found their forever homes.

Dramatic horse rescue in rising flood water

Dramatic horse rescue in rising flood water

Poppy, a two year old horse, recently found herself stranded down a steep bank alongside rapidly rising flood water in Otaki Gorge.

The SPCA Animal Rescue Unit was deployed along with mutual aid partners. Upon arrival, an equine veterinarian and animal rescue technicians assessed, stabilised and sedated the horse while other rescuers prepared a helicopter cable at a landing site downstream.

With only seconds to spare before Poppy became submerged, the teams successfully slung her by helicopter to safety on dry land.
