Autumn Newsletter 2016

Hi <<First Name>>,

Welcome back to Chiptech's bi-monthly newsletter. After unseasonably warm autumnal weather, winter is slowly settling in here in the Southern Hemisphere. Staying warm and healthy is important year-round, though this becomes a more prominent concern in these colder months.

This month Chiptech has celebrated a huge milestone. We have reached our 100,000th ERICA board! This is a massive achievement, and we're proud of everyone who has been involved in helping us reach this goal. We're eagerly looking forward to producing 100,000 more!

In this month's release of our newsletter, our first story delves into the world of pacemakers and Pearl personal help buttons. Our Sales and Marketing Coordinator, Abby Moore examines the ever-increasing role pacemakers are playing in peoples' lives, and gives you a run down on how to use these life-changing devices in conjunction with Chiptech Pearl pendants.

Along with Abby's article, we discuss plug packs, and welcome a new staff member to the Chiptech team.

Enjoy!

Friday Fun

Wanting to incorporate a bit of fun into our weekly routine, the team at Chiptech are no strangers to fancy dress days. Previously our dress up day themes have included Short Short Day, Loud Shirt Day, and most recently, Hat and Wig Day. It's a great way for our staff to inject a bit of fun into the work atmosphere, and have a laugh with one another.

Pacemakers and Pearl Personal Help Buttons

The ever-developing role of technology, along with advancement of treatments in the medical world holds exciting promise for patients or on-going sufferers of a variety of conditions. All designed with the end user in mind, the continued development of medical and personal help devices ensures ease-of-use and convenience for those who need it most. Many people nowadays have a multitude of devices within their homes, engineered with their convenience in mind.

But are they all compatible? Is device compatibility something to be worried about? Should we be concerned about device interference for wearers of a pacemaker?

What is a Pacemaker?

Sitting under the skin and encased in metal, pacemakers are made up of a long-lasting battery and an electronic circuit. If the heart rate is too slow, the pacemaker sends an electric signal to the heart muscle to start a heartbeat (via leads connected to heart muscles). When the heart resumes its normal rate or beat, the pacemaker will not activate.

Having a pacemaker can greatly improve quality of life and for some people it can be life-saving. It is a good idea to check the manufacturer's brochure of any devices used in conjunction with a pacemaker, and ask the staff at the pacemaker clinic about concerns regarding compatible technology. While most electrical appliances will not affect a pacemaker, it is recommended by the Heart Foundation of New Zealand that the following equipment is avoided as it may interfere with a pacemaker:
  • Medical equipment such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), lithotripsy or radiotherapy
  • Magnetic bracelets and mattresses or chairs
  • Diathermy / TENX machines used by physiotherapists and during surgery
  • Electro-cautery and ultrasonic scaling equipment used by dentists
  • Electrolysis for hair removal
  • Working on car ignition systems
  • Electric arc welders
  • Close proximity to high power radar or electrical installations
It is recommended that if a powerful electrical device causes dizziness, step away from the device.

How can Chiptech help?

Chiptech would like to advise all wearers of pacemakers about the compatibility of these devices with the Pearl personal help buttons.

The models and technology used in pacemakers is improving and changing over time. Without the make and model of the pacemaker Chiptech is unable to categorically say that there won't be any interaction between the pacemakers and the Pearl personal help button. Although the likelihood of such an event is remote and the devices should have no impact on each other, this cannot be guaranteed.

Chiptech is happy to contact the pacemaker manufacturers and establish whether there is potential for an interaction. The pacemaker make and model number needs to be supplied to Chiptech in order for us to investigate.

Plug Packs - What to Expect

Recently, we changed the plug packs for ERICA, ERICA GSM, and EVE base units. These are now shaped differently for ease of use, and, after having undergone rigorous testing, have passed the very latest European Standards, ensuring maximum efficiency and safety.

We thought it would be a good idea to give you a run through of what to expect with our new product.
  • It is normal for the plug pack to become warm and retain heat while operational.
  • When reusing plug packs, it is important that you visually check for any signs of impact damage. It is a good idea to check these products specifically for bent pins, damage to the plastic case, bare wires on the cable, or damage to the connector. The most common damage has followed people tripping over cables. It is good to ensure that when installed, the cables are not likely to be a hazard.
  • While Chiptech guarantees the quality of our products, natural wear and tear of products can be expected over time. Do not reinstall a damaged plug pack, replace with a new one - we have plenty in stock.

If you have any queries regarding this or any other product, contact one of our knowledgeable sales team members today.

The Changing Environment we love and work in

Five years after Christchurch's February Earthquake, it is exciting to see so many new and improved local businesses returning and thriving again in Ferrymead.

Numerous new buildings have been completed and are occupied by a variety of retail options with many more under construction. It is exciting to see this revival happening on our doorstep, as we are a close community committed to supporting our local businesses.
