Dr Mario Hardy received an honorary Doctor of Letters from PATA member, Capilano University, Vancouver, Canada. The university recognised Mario’s global leadership in responsible tourism and support for the acclaimed PATA Foundation supported Vietnam Community Based Tourism (CBT) project. As noted by Dr Chris Bottrill, Dean of the Faculty of Global and Community Studies, "the Honorary Doctorate is the highest honour we can provide. Mario has been a friend to our university and program for several years. Of note, he is a keen follower and participant in the progress of our students and faculty and we are especially grateful for that.” The day of celebration was rounded out with Sabrina Ouellette, a past CBT student volunteer delivering the Valedictorian speech, and Ly Lo May, a resident of Taphin, Vietnam, one of the CBT villages, receiving her Tourism Management Diploma.

Solid growths are forecasted across Asia sub-regions

Average growth rate between 2016 and 2020 for South Asia is forecasted to set the highest pace at 7.7 percent. Southeast Asia is also expected to experience strong pace in average annual growth (6.5%) over the same period while Northeast Asia is forecasted to grow at a rather more leisurely rate of 3.4 percent.

Dusit Thani Guam Resort hosts its first international conference at its Guam Convention Centre
 

The Dusit Thani Guam Resort recently played host to the Pacific Asia Travel Association’s annual summit attended by more than 640 delegates from over 33 countries.

The summit in May enabled the resort to showcase the island’s only convention centre. The event helped to draw attention to Guam’s strengths for international travellers and the hotel’s capacity to host major conventions as the island aims to become a preferred MICE destination.

IATA: Industry welcomes clarity on EU passenger rights
 

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) welcomed the publication of Interpretative Guidelines on Regulation 261/2004 by the European Commission which brings greater clarity to the European Union’s passenger rights regulation.
