From the Executive Headmaster’s desk… JUBILEE GRATITUDE
Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present and Creating Legacies for the Future…. Our Jubilee celebrations were a wonderful example of all these things as the St David’s community came together to celebrate our foundation 75 years ago.
We marked every pillar of our work as a school with Jubilee events – the Religious in the Birthday Mass in January when we blessed the Jubilee Fountain in the St David’s Quad, and also in the Champagnat Day Mass and the Jubilee Mass on Sunday when 3000 people gathered for this culmination of the Jubilee week; Outreach in the work of the staff for bursary funding in the successful Champagnat Day Carnival; the Academic by hosting the Africa Region Conference of the International Boys’ School Coalition in March; the Cultural in the hugely successful combined production of The Prodigal Son which ran to packed and appreciative houses; the Sporting in the two jubilee fixtures, at the start of the week against our traditional rivals St Benedict’s, and this last weekend in a new derby against Clifton School from Durban. We have also focused on our Old Boys, who have joined us from around the world attending the Old Boys’ Assembly, and enjoying various social events as well as Community as 600 people attended the Jubilee Dinner and thousands visited the campus over the Jubilee Week.
It was quite a week, and whether in supporting the various formal events during the week or just reconnecting casually on the side of a field or at tea after Mass, I say a very big thank you to our community on realising that the most important part of a Marist education here at St David’s are the people of our community. In his homily, the Auxiliary Bishop, Duncan Tsoke, reminded us to cherish what we have here at St David’s, the legacy of all those who have built our school to be what it is today. He also challenged us to fill our lives with the positive and to show continual gratitude for all we have. Let’s do that as we move beyond the Jubilee into the next 75 years of Marist education here at St David’s.
Thank you to everybody for their involvement in organising their component of the celebrations, and a special thank you to Mrs Lara Klement, Mr Mike Boden, Mr Willy Castle, Mr Graeme Edwards and their teams for co-ordinating these individual events into a fantastic ten days.
