By now we’ve all heard about and been horrified by the attack in Orlando. If you’re like me, I know you’re feeling heartbroken and angry and frustrated. I know that I’m tired of writing this same message to you all. We were already planning to bring back our Marriage Equality Gradients in honor of June Pride. After the events of the weekend, selling rainbow yarn gradients just didn’t feel like enough. Ultimately, this mass shooting isn’t just about the GBLTI community. It also isn’t about blaming a religion that is different than mine.
This heinous crime was motivated by hate. Hate comes to us in many guises. Hatred for people who are of a different religion, race, gender identity, sex, political affiliation, etc. At the end of the day, I truly believe that only love can conquer hate. Right now, that belief isn’t very satisfying. It doesn’t give me a concrete action to take. We can’t legislate love and hate. However, as a community, we can do everything possible to make sure that assault weapons are not readily available to people planning to express their hate with violence. We CAN alter gun policy in this country. We MUST.
So, from now until July 31, 2016, Neighborhood Fiber Co. will donate 25% of ALL online sales to Everytown for Gun Safety. Everytown is a nonprofit organization working to end gun violence. I encourage you to visit their website and FB page to learn more about the work that the coalition of people that they represent and the work that they are doing. From a business standpoint, this fundraiser might put me and my livelihood in the position of alienating potential and current customers. I am not taking a stand against the Second Amendment, but my principles demand that I take stand against hate and violence.
With all my love,
Karida
