2016–19 Strategic Plan
Plan evolving: Australian Wool Innovation (AWI)'s 2016–19 Strategic Plan continues to be shaped in consultation with the many industry stakeholders.

AWI's mission is to make strategically-targeted investments in Research, Development, Extension and skills training to enhance the profitability, international competitiveness and sustainability of the Australian wool industry, and increase demand and market access for Australian wool.

AWI has now released a 112-page draft version of the Strategic Plan, and comments and feedback on the draft Plan are welcomed via consultation@wool.com.

AWI CEO Stuart McCullough said the development of the Strategic Plan is a continual process, and “the document has evolved over many months and countless conversations with woolgrowers and wool industry bodies around the country; I encourage anyone interested in the future of wool to review the document and have their say.”

Livestock and floods
Be vigilant: Producers in flood-affected areas of Tasmania are being warned to watch out for animal diseases that can occur after severe wet weather.

Livestock Biosecurity Network (LBN) Tasmanian Regional Officer Dr Jess Coad said "in the weeks and months after a flood, we often see a spike in animal diseases in the affected areas, including gastro-intestinal issues from unsafe drinking water, skin and hoof conditions, and infectious transmissible diseases such as Leptospirosis".

"Carcass disposal should be attended to as soon as possible, as they pose a health hazard and encourage scavenging by feral and domestic cats and dogs, increasing the risk of spreading diseases such as hydatids, sheep measles, toxoplasmosis and sacrocystis", Jess said.

Young future leaders: The Sheepmeat Council of Australia (SCA) is seeking applications from sheep producers aged 22–40 for the Sheepmeat Industry Ambassador's Award.

The award recognises the contributions of two outstanding young sheep producers and their potential as industry leaders, and is part of a new SCA and Meat & Livestock Australia joint initiative, Building Leadership Capability for the Sheep Industry.

The ambassador role is for two years and includes an all-expenses paid, two-week study tour from 8–20 August 2016 in Australia and New Zealand including attending Australia’s premier sheepmeat industry event, LambEx 2016. Visits showcasing the industry supply chain as part of the Tri-Lamb Agreement with the United States, Australia and New Zealand are also included.

Interested young sheep producers must submit an application form and a two-minute video clip to be considered for the award. In the video, applicants must demonstrate their role in the industry and their vision for its future.

Wool apparel growth
Global demographics: According to Dr Clint Laurent – a leading demographics forecaster who spoke at the International Wool Textiles Organisation (IWTO) Congress in Sydney in April – global shifts in the premium sector of the clothing market during the next decade will have a positive influence on the market for wool apparel.

"The consumer base is changing with the growth of the 'working age empty nester' segment, who are maintaining income (by working later in life), have fewer dependents, and hence higher than average disposable income. They are more than half of the premium market – and increasing – and spend above average on clothing."
