The three latest practices to join Nirvana Health – Takanini, Papatoetoe and Botany South – had their Cornerstone accreditation visits from the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) in April.
A huge congratulations to the staff in each clinic for their dedication and hard work in working towards accreditation within such a short time frame.

A special mention also goes to Mt Roskill, Glen Innes and Browns Road clinics that are undergoing ACC audits for the first time to enable them to become accident and medical clinics. This month, Lunn Ave, Glenfield, Mangere and New Lynn clinics are going through re-certification.
A vast amount of work goes into gaining and maintaining accreditation. Total Healthcare highly commends Nirvana Health clinicians and staff for their commitment to quality care.

Otahuhu clinic stars in television documentary

One of Total Healthcare’s provider clinics features in TVNZ’s Attitude TV in a documentary called The disease that is killing my family.
The documentary is about type 2 diabetes and includes a story about patient Ropata Adams-Walker, who visits East Tamaki Healthcare Otahuhu GP Reshma Thota (pictured) to talk about his health and diabetes risk.

Ranjna Patel on Indian healthcare panel

Nirvana Health Group director and PHO executive trustee Ranjna Patel (seated, second right) has just returned from India where she took part in the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Conference panel on healthcare.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas marks the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India. The event commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Bombay in 1915.
Mrs Patel was part of a panel made up of 10 overseas health providers and 10 local providers and policy people tasked with making India the preferred destination for holistic healthcare and provided recommendations to the Indian Government.
"India is already doing a lot of procedural work for American insurance companies, but the Indian Government was looking at combining traditional healing into the mix," Mrs Patel says.
Submissions from expat Indians were received from all over the world to take part in the panel discussion. New Zealand High Commissioner to India Sanjiv Kohli was behind Mrs Patel’s successful bid to travel to New Delhi in May.

GP Mahesh Patel visits Kaiser Permanente

Nirvana Health Group clinical operations director Dr Mahesh Patel was one of three New Zealanders who attended a special Kaiser Permanente conference in the US in April.
Joined by Dr Gloria Johnson from Counties Manukau Health and West Coast GP Dr Greville Wood, Dr Patel, also a PHO trustee, learned about Kaiser Permanente’s model of care.
Kaiser Permanente (KP) is a leading provider of healthcare and not-for-profit provider of insurance; most services are provided under one roof and patients have a team of clinicians working with them.
One key aspect that interested Dr Patel was that there’s one online “dashboard” for the patient that all staff can see, secondary and primary care clinicians, and everyone takes responsibility for the patient.
He says it is part of KP staff training that if a smear or immunisation is due, whoever opens the dashboard needs to act on it. Dr Patel hopes to bring some of KP’s best aspects to Nirvana Health.

Health mentoring for whānau out west

#tatou is a new service for West Auckland patients who want to lead healthier lifestyles.
Total Healthcare is supporting Waipareira Trust kaiarahi (health mentors) work with whānau to identify areas of their health that they would like to work on, developing a whānau health plan, and connecting to services across the whole of the Whānau Centre and in the community.
Whānau will also have access to resources and workshops that will add to their kete of knowledge and support them on their journey.
The project, which is in a testing phase, aims to reduce obesity in West Auckland Māori.
East Tamaki Healthcare's lead psychologist, Leona Didsbury, and Peer Leader, Gary Sutcliffe, are now members of the steering group acknowledging the synergy with this service to Nirvana Health Group's health coaching, Kia Kaha and Manage Better initiatives.
Registrations are now open until the end of June. Patients can self-refer, or be referred via clinicians by filling out the registration form. Please note, places are strictly limited.

Working together to improve health outcomes
Total Healthcare contracts Nirvana Health Group as its management support organisation, and Nirvana contracts medical providers to deliver the services required in the PHO/DHB contracts. The providers include East Tamaki Healthcare, West Auckland Healthcare, Mt Roskill Healthcare, Ratanui Medical Centre and White Cross.
