Antigua Minister of Health Honourable Molwyn Joseph - A Caribbean NCD Champion: ‘Walking the Talk’

Honourable Minister of Health for Antigua, Mr. Molwyn Joseph
During the 69th World Health Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland, May 23 to 28, the President of the HCC Sir Trevor Hassell and Executive Director, Maisha Hutton, had the distinct pleasure of a candid chat with the Honourable Minister of Health of Antigua, Mr. Molwyn Joseph and his Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rhonda Sealey-Thomas. The Minister’s fresh and unapologetic approach to addressing chronic diseases in Antigua and Barbuda was exciting and inspiring. Quite simply Minister Joseph and his team, led by CMO Dr. Sealey-Thomas are ‘disrupting’ the status quo and making positive changes worthy of watching from across the Caribbean and globally.

As we ate lunch against the stunning backdrop of the Alps nestled on placid Lake Geneve, the Minister shared his personal philosophies on leadership, overcoming challenges and helping Antiguan's to help themselves. 'I always say if you observe people long enough they will tell you what they want and every morning and evening I would see people walking on the highways’  The Minister took this as a signal that his people wanted recreational spaces and this catalysed the development of parks designed to support and encourage increased physical activity in each of the countries 6 districts. ‘Quite often when faced with challenges, I see opportunities…’ Minister Joseph commented as he shared his no nonsense plan to clean up his country in which he empowered and incentivised young men to become entrepreneurs leading the government’s initiative which has virtually changed the landscape of the country resulting in a cleaner, healthier environment. Jamaica Well Represented at The World Congress of Cardiology
The World Congress of Cardiology, hosted by the World Heart Federation, was held in Mexico City June 4-7, 2016

The vision of the WHF is meeting the WHO target for NCD mortality reduction by reducing premature deaths from cardiovascular disease by at least 25% by 2025; and tobacco control measures such as the accelerated implementation of the FCTC is an important component of this action.
Jamaica was represented at the meeting by Mrs Deborah Chen the Executive Director of the Heart Foundation of Jamaica and past Vice President of the WHF and former Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson. Dr Fenton Ferguson was invited by the Scientific Committee of the World Congress of Cardiology to make two presentations on Sunday June 5th, 2016 at their meeting in Mexico City. Dr Ferguson was instrumental in the enactment of Jamaica’s Tobacco Control Regulations in 2013.

Dominica Celebrates World Health Day

World Health Day 2016 was observed by the Ministry of Health and Environment through the Health Promotion Resource Centre in collaboration with the Dominica Diabetes Association at the Roseau Primary School on Thursday April 7, 2016. This year’s theme is “Stay Super: Beat Diabetes with Fit and Healthy Children”. Activities planned for the day focused on Eating Healthy and Being Active.
Roseau Primary School
The day event bought excitement and education to the students aged 2 to 11 years old at the Roseau Primary School where there are a few students living with Diabetes.

Activities for the day included:
  • Reading of the Minister’s World Health Day Speech to the children by Ms Marvlyn Birmingham  President of the Dominica Diabetes Association.
  • The pinning of the school principal with the World Diabetes Pin.
  • Diabetes exhibition which focused on healthy eating with the use of food models and sugar displays
  • Sampling of healthy snacks prepared by the Health Promotion Resource Centre. Students sampled fruits kebabs, and lentils accras among other exciting and tasty snacks.
  • Physical activity was also conducted using the Hoolahoop.
Physical activity was also conducted using the Hoolahoop
The activity was rated as successful by the Health Promotion Unit and the Dominica Diabetes association and resulted in not only an increased awareness among students and staff on diabetes but also on  the importance of adoption of healthy lifestyle practices to prevent and manage the condition.

The students of Roseau Primary School confessed that a lot had been learnt about diabetes and the ways to prevent it. Motivated, many said they would talk to their parents about this new information relating to Diabetes. It was a fruitful and impactful day. See more pictures from the event here.

Call for cases: Public-Private Interactions in Nutrition-related Non-communicable Diseases: Lessons from Research, Policy and Practice

UK Health Forum
Deadline: 15 July, 2016.
Multisectoral initiatives such as public-private interactions have been proposed to achieve UN and WHO goals on nutrition-related non-communicable diseases. However, these public-private interactions may give rise to a range of ethical challenges, including conflicts of interest. This Casebook will focus on public-private interactions involving the for-profit commercial sector. It will aim to raise awareness and support action to strengthen the governance of these interactions and prevent conflicts of interest.  Cases documenting both positive as well as negative experiences are encouraged, as are submissions from low and middle income countries. Cases may be submitted from other risk factor areas where they offer transferable lessons for nutrition-related NCDs. Read more

Acting in the Anthropocene: the EAT – Lancet Commission

Expanding waistlines are a problem not just for dietitians and population health specialists but, increasingly, for Earth system scientists too. The waistlines belong largely to the growing global middle class. The world is undergoing a dramatic nutrition transition to western diets. Wealth, industrialisation, and rapid urbanisation are driving a surge in resource-intensive meat and dairy products and ultra-processed foods. This dietary shift is the main cause of an exponential rise in obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Read more

How Much We Eat vs. How Much We Need

How Much We Eat vs. How Much We Need
BY NATHAN YAU - My two-year-old eats and eats, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at him. Almost every day at the dinner table I wonder where all that food goes in such a tiny body. I understand now why my grandma always laughed in delight as she piled my plate on every chance.

Those days are long gone for me of course. Many good things come with age, but metabolism is not one of them, especially with my lazy, sedentary butt in front of the computer all day. Read more
