Google Maps Misleading for Whitley Bridge Slip Road
Several residents have asked us for the location of this “Illegal Left Turn”, so we resorted to Google Maps as an easy way of explaining. However, we discovered that the map is rather misleading. The location of one of their arrows gives the impression that you can turn left at the top of the new slip road.

Roger informed officers of our findings & received this response from Ian Lewis, Senior Programme Manager
I do note the plan as shown on Google, however the arrows are only provided by Google where there is a designated one way flow of traffic and not turning movements so as I would read it the arrows show the one way traffic flow entrance and exit over the new bridge. This could be confusing to some users but the signage as on site would provide the necessary information.

I will say my previous dealings with Google on asking for changes at other locations in the UK have not been easy.

Travellers at Ashington Grove Playing Fields
Received 6th June from Anthony Molloy, City Services
I can confirm that the gates have been secured and the clean-up works have commenced. There are a lot of logs and branches at the bottom of the field and Streetpride staff will return tomorrow with JCB, Tractors and trailers to clear.

Officers are considering a height restriction barrier as a longer term solution to prevent this situation happening again.

Whitley Bridge – Illegal Left Turn - Second Survey
Compared to the previous week there were a lot more vehicles & they were queuing on the A444. 32% of the vehicles using the slip made an illegal turn compared to 18% last week. We witnessed 6 near misses as drivers in the right hand lane turned sharply left in front of those correctly turning towards JLR.

These are the results that Roger sent to officers:
Survey was carried out on Wednesday 8th June between 3.55pm & 5.05pm
  • Vehicles in left lane turning correctly right -  200
  • Vehicles in left lane turning an illegal left -  238
  • Vehicles in right lane turning correctly right -  377
  • Vehicles in right lane turning an illegal left - 45
  • At least 35 drivers changed their minds on seeing us in hi-viz jackets
More took their chances as traffic built up on the bypass, while we also noticed that a lot of vehicles also used Leaf Lane.

Positive Images Festival Receives Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service
Mehru Fitter MBE, Cheylesmore resident and Secretary of Positive Images Festival, shares exciting news with us:

Positive Images Festival, a community-led festival, has won a top accolade – the Queen’s Award for voluntary Service. The award, instituted in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, recognises excellence in volunteering.

Positive Images Festival made a modest beginning in 1995 as a one day Multicultural Book Fair, run jointly with the city’s library service. Since then it has grown prodigiously in size. It has a 200 plus membership. The 2015 Positive Images Festival attracted 17,201 visitors to its 150 plus events.

The Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands, who made the assessment, commented, “For three weeks each summer the Positive Images Festival celebrates the culture and traditions of Coventry’s varied communities while demonstrating that all are valued as citizens of one large community. The dedicated volunteers offer an impressive example of harmonious working; they are, individually and collectively, one of the most enthusiastic groups of volunteers that I have met. I am absolutely delighted that their hard work has been rewarded by this prestigious honour.”

“Positive Images Festival is a people’s festival, a festival to conquer people’s minds and win their hearts,” remarked Mehru. “Getting the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is a fantastic start to the 2016 festival.”     Read more

It is no ordinary cultural strategy - it is an ambitious cultural strategy in evolution and will be grounded in research and rooted in the distinctiveness of Coventry as a place and population.
With support of Arts Council England, the Council has commissioned Warwick Business School to lead the process of developing a 10-year cultural strategy. The context for the work is both exciting and challenging.

Launch of Strategic Economic Plan
Received from Martin Reeves, Chief Executive, on Friday 10th June

Today at the ICC in Birmingham the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) launched its Strategic Economic Plan ‘Making our Mark – the West Midlands, the best region in the UK to do business’.
Please take the time to have a look at the plan on
www.westmidlandscombinedauthority.org.uk you will find a short version of the plan, full plan, its technical appendices and some questions and answers about the plan.
The Shadow Combined Authority also had its AGM earlier today. We were hoping that the launch of the Strategic Economic Plan, alongside some important updates on the Mental Health Commission chaired by Norman Lamb MP, transport initiatives and the launch of a collective investment fund would coincide with the formal establishment (vesting) of the WMCA.  Unfortunately the final stages of Parliamentary approval have not been completed so we will need to wait a little longer for the official go ahead.
As ever, I will keep you updated over the next few weeks – and get in touch if you want to share an opinion, idea or concern about where we have got to with the WMCA.
