In the wake of the financial challenges facing CPS we have to remember what led us to enroll our children at Coonley. We need to stay focused on what is truly important… The educational experience that the Coonley teachers, staff, parents, and community create daily for our students. It is the smiles, the inquisitive looks, the giggles, the piqued curiosity that makes it all worth it. The struggle is real but the payoff is amazing. We can’t let anything change or cloud the collective joy that our children feel each day. It is our job to shield our children from the problems that adults have caused and that adults must now solve. The Coonley Administration, staff, FOC, LSC, and PTO stand together and state emphatically that we are #committedtoCoonley. We pledge today to do all we can to protect what this community has created.
We would like our entire community to share all of the wonderful reasons why we are so #committedtoCoonley. We ask that you think back to all the times that you felt pride to be a part of the Coonley community. Tell us that story...let’s collectively fill our cups with the joys instead of the gloom. Together Coonley will overcome any challenges. Take to social media and share your own #committedtoCoonley moments.
Coonley Camp and Camp Jr.!
Just a friendly reminder that remaining balances were due on June 1st. Checks can be made out to "Coonley School" and can be dropped off at the office.There are still some spots left but all forms and balances are due no later than June 21st. This is a firm deadline so that we can staff and prep projects appropriately. Thank you for understanding and we are excited for a GREAT summer!

Countdown to Summer: Wednesday, June 15th After School!
- Kindergarten Meet & Greet: Coonley administration will host its 2016 Kindergarten Meet & Greet for all 2016-17 Kindergarteners from 4:30 - 5:30 pm in the Coonley Multipurpose Room. Families will have an opportunity to meet some of the teachers, tour classrooms, meet representatives from the parent organizations (FOC and PTO) and Local School Council, receive the handbook, supply list, and "Coonley Summer Read" book, and lessen the potential for first day of school anxiety.
- Food Trucks: The Coonley PTO has arranged for food trucks to arrive at Coonley after school. This will allow Coonley families both new and old to enjoy an extended time on the Coonley playlot. Chicago Pizza Boss, Cheesie's, Beavers Donuts, Babycakes and Chicago Cupcakes Food Trucks will be parked on Leavitt Street from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.
- Coonley Spirit Wear: The final Coonley Spirit Wear sales of the year will take place next to the Multipurpose Room after school beginning at 4:00 pm. Car magnets and Chico bags will also be available for purchase. Cash or checks only!
Reminders
Health Requirements for Fall 2016 Start of School
Students new to Coonley School, going into Kindergarten, 6th grade and 9th grade will need a new Physical Exam (ok 1 year from September 1, 2015) to enter school. Immunization and Health Exam requirements (Spanish). Please bring in all health reports as soon as you get them.
Students with Medication in School
Please plan to pick up your student’s medication on the last day of school. We will only send home Emergency Medication (Epipens and asthma inhalers). Any prescription or over the counter medications will need to be picked up by parents or we will dispose of them on the last day of school.
Yearbooks Have Arrived!
If you purchased a yearbook on-line or by paper form they were sent home with students 6/9/16. A limited quantity are still available for sale in the main office for $25.
June Local School Council Meeting Moved
The Coonley LSC has decided to move their June meeting to June 20th at 7:15 pm. The LSC hopes to receive further information from CPS regarding 2016 - 2017 school year.
Reported Catastrophic Cuts to the Coonley's Budget
Public Advocacy Sites have laid out how each school's budget would be affected by the reduction in funding. If no other funding is allocated, it is estimated that Coonley stands to lose from $800,000 to $1.5 million from our 2016-2017 budget. There is still time to act. We advocate for all families to join the movement. Our state lawmakers have the opportunity to begin to solve this crisis before their June recess.

Selective Prep
Register NOW for SelectivePrep’s After School Coonley Selective Enrollment Program (for 8th Graders)
One third of the entrance score is determined by your child’s performance on the Selective Enrollment High School Entrance Exam. SelectivePrep offers an intensive program to help prepare students for the Selective Enrollment Entrance Exam. SelectivePrep’s course will review all the Exam’s Reading, Math, Language, and Vocabulary topics and discuss optimal test taking techniques. Included in this program is a Study Guide containing extensive content review and exercises.
Classes at Coonley will start on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 and run for 8 sessions from 3:45 PM – 5:45 PM. We will need a minimum of 10 students to run the class at Coonley – so please spread the word. Click here to register.
