VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT
I am writing the monthly report as Julie is currently in America attending a Deaf Expo and CODA Conference, with some well-earned R&R thrown in, catching up with her daughter.

Before Julie left, she visited Melbourne Polytechnic where she spoke to two different groups of Auslan students to provide information about ASLIA Vic surrounding the service and support provided to members. She also met with students from the RMIT course, taking the opportunity to meet our future interpreters as they prepare to enter the profession.

At the start of June, the committee met for a full day of planning. As it was close to the middle of our current term, it was a perfect time to reflect on the previous 6 months and to discuss and plan for the remainder of the year. We were very grateful that our National President, Eve Hedley joined us to outline plans for ASLIA and issues effecting all States. It was wonderful that she was able to take time out of her busy schedule to be with us. The rest of the day was spent consolidating plans already established and to further discuss member feedback and ideas for future Professional Development opportunities.

Tarcia attended the NAATI RAC meeting where she was informed that three important pieces of information will soon be available on the NAATI website, presented in Auslan. The videos will be regarding who NAATI is and what they do, information on attaining Auslan/English NAATI accreditation, and information on attaining Deaf Interpreter accreditation. These presentations will be a welcome addition on the website.

The DC-S Reflective Practice Series has continued this month with a session being held in Geelong. It was a great success with all attending finding the discussions valuable. Following this, we had Ben Souter presenting an Auslan to English workshop. This was delivered in the form of an A – Z of tips to improve your skills when interpreting in the direction of Auslan to English. Feedback following the event showed that it was enjoyed and appreciated by those in attendance, and again showed that this topic is one that is sought by many as an area where practitioners want to improve. We are pleased to say that this workshop will be available soon as a webinar for those unable to take part on the day.
There are many upcoming PDs for July and August, starting with AUSIT’s ‘Familiarisation with Two Medical Specialisations’. This will also be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person. On the 2nd August, our next DC-S, Case Study Reflective Practice Session will be held at the JML Centre (Vicdeaf). The 18th August sees a big day in Bendigo with a DC-S Reflective Practice Session being held in the morning, and at the same venue in the afternoon, we are very pleased to have a workshop focusing on ‘Transitioning from Paraprofessional to Professional’ which will be presented by Peter Bonser. August concludes with Jody Barney and Wurundjeri Elder, Aunty Di Kerr presenting ‘Deaf Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander Awareness Training’ at Aurora School in Blackburn South. This will be followed in the afternoon by the ASLIA Vic AGM.
Further information about PD opportunities can be found following this report.
Our thanks go to the Deafness Foundation whose financial assistance has enabled us to provide additional services and support when providing professional development sessions for our members.

At the time of us sending this newsletter to you, there is much discussion and concern regarding the issue with NABS and their new terms and Conditions and Rates of Pay. We, at ASLIA Vic, are doing all that we can to support members through this period, and will continue to update you as information comes to hand.  Our key focus as we seek a resolution is to ensure that we work alongside the Deaf community to achieve best outcomes for all. Please see letters from organisations regarding this issue following this report.

Don’t forget to register for the NAC and also keep an eye out for pre-NAC workshops and Deaf Expo.  It is also time to renew your ASLIA membership.
There is still plenty happening for the final 6 months of 2016!

On these cold winter days, remember that every day that passes means we are one day closer to summer.

Carolyn Montague.

AUSIT has been receiving email queries about the PD event scheduled for 16 July (medical specialisations). As an event of this type has not often been run previously, the following information is intended to clarify aspects that it was not possible to include in the initial eFlash for reasons of space.

·         Important: unavailability on the scheduled date. People who do not expect to be able to view the live-streaming on the scheduled date (absence, other commitments, unreliable internet connection, etc) should not register for this event. Instead, see the information below about subsequently purchasing a recording of the event.

·         Link for live-streaming. All those who have registered as ‘participating by live-streaming at another location’ will receive the link to that live-stream by email once registrations have closed on Wed 13 Jul. They will also be given a phone number to which questions for the two presenters can be texted. The moderator will attempt to ensure that there is a balance between questions from the immediate audience and the live-streaming audience during the 15 minutes allocated for each speaker.

·         Location for live-streaming. The intention is that most live-stream participants will view it via the internet at a location of their own choosing; in effect, this will be a form of webinar. The various state branches have also been given the option of organising a public location in their capital city for a ‘group’ viewing using a projector. Some have indicated their intention to do this, but not all: if you would like your branch to do this, you should contact them directly to indicate your interest. However, such ‘group’ viewings will depend on the availability of suitable equipment and inexpensive venues, and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

·         Cost. Both attendance (in Melbourne) and live-streaming elsewhere are being offered at the same scale of prices: $40 AUSIT / ASLIA members, $60 non-members, $20 student members, and $30 student non-members.

·         Recording. Auslan Connections will also be recording the entire live-stream; once this has been edited and uploaded to the AUSIT website (which may require several days) it will be available to purchase for the same scale of prices as above, in the same way as other such products have previously been made available on the AUSIT website. Those who have registered for this event (attendance or live-stream) will not receive any discount on the subsequent purchase of the recording. A further eFlash will be sent out once the recording is available.

Regards,

Dave Deck
Vic/Tas branch chairman

This full day workshop offers the opportunity for case managers and therapists to enhance their knowledge and skills in the engagement and management of statutory clients who present with complex needs. The ethical dilemmas and challenges of client confidentiality will be covered, particularly when communicating identified risks with other services. This will be an interactive session using case studies and there will be opportunities to reflect upon practice.

This education session is suitable for experienced workers in both the government and non-government sectors and in the fields of mental health, disability, drug and alcohol, child protection and corrections.

Mark Megalla is a Social Worker and Danielle Ashley is an Occupational Therapist.
