CABMA folks are already in Dallas & the big news yesterday from the annual NACDA Convention was NCAA CFO McNeely noting a $25M spend for the most recent fiscal year on outside legal fees, a figure that's up from $13.8M in 2014. As you would guess, developments around the O'Bannon & Sandusky cases led to the increased spend on legal representation. The NCAA had budgeted only $6.7M leading into the year & $20M will be projected for 2017. McNeely: "I was naïve in believing that our legal fees would start to come down, I’m willing to admit that. It’s a litigious environment." Total revenue for 2015 was $912M with $567M pushed back to member institutions. - link
Further down in the same article from above, penned by USA Today's Berkowitz, NCAA CFO McNeely says schools will begin to receive templates this Fall on how they can use their share of the additional $200M distribution from the national office. Member institutions will have 90 days to submit their plans for the funds, which have to be used within 10 years unless they're put into an endowment. There's also discussions on how additional monies generated by TV contracts by the NCAA will be divvied out with APR scores possibly playing a key role. McNeely pointed to one proposed plan that considers APR & 33% to 36% of schools would have been ineligible to receive a cut. - link (scroll down)
CBSSports.com's Solomon spoke to four current or former SEC student-athletes who participated in the league's recent annual meetings on their experiences & thoughts about the current landscape. Ole Miss Baseball's Bramlett says "mistrust" between student-athletes & upper administration is a major issue right now. Texas A&M swimmer Marc indicates getting paid is not something his peers talk much about, though Tennessee WBB's DeShields calls it "the pink elephant in the room." When directly asked about additional compensation, two of the four respond that it should be in place, the other two believe it would "change the whole system." More off time doesn't really seem to be an issue for this quartet & all generally feel student-athletes should have a vote on items that impact their experience. More. - link
Lincoln Journal Star's Sipple catches up with Nebraksa AD Eichorst on the average Big Ten finish for the Cornhuskers of 6.67. Discussion is based off an interesting chart listing the league standings for each & every B1G sport for every school. Michigan tops the list at an average finish of 3.75, followed by Ohio State at 4.14 & Minnesota at 5.08. Eichorst knows there's room for improvement, but also believes the student-athlete experience in Lincoln may be the very best in the conference. "We're trendsetters. We lead in almost every category academically. We lead almost every category from a life skills/community service perspective." More. - link (article), link (chart)
LSU will no longer allow visiting team bands to perform on the field during halftime of FB games. Assoc. AD for Communications Bonnette: "It's a safety issue. We don't have room down there for both bands. In order for bands to perform at half, they've got to come down to the field before the first half ends. That's a lot of people on the sideline." More, from Deputy AD Nunez: "This has been overblown. It's something the risk management team is continuing to discuss." - link
Heartbreaking news from Lake Tahoe as Nevada FB student-athlete Ta has still not been found by local law authorities after a paddle board incident on Friday night. Wolf Pack HC Polian: "The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is calling this search one of recovery, not rescue. As such, it is with an incredibly heavy heart that we acknowledge the loss of Marc Ma, a beloved member of our Wolf Pack family...Our team has lost a friend and a brother and we are hurting right now.  I have no doubt that we will rally together to love and support one another in manner that will honor Marc's memory." - link

Six airlines have won permission to start regular flights from the U.S. to Cuba. American, Frontier, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest & Sun Country received approval from the Department of Transportation for up to 155 round trips per week. Flights will originate from five cities: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Minneapolis, Chicago & Philadelphia. Technically, general tourist travel to the island is still prohibited. - link

Outgoing North Texas AD Villarreal will receive $384,906 over the next 15 months as a buyout of his deal. The Denton Record-Chronicle's Vito got access to the data via an open records request. Villarreal will officially step down on June 20 after 15 years in charge of the Mean Green. - link
Old Dominion AD Selig continues to be bullish on the potential of the Monarchs FB program, especially given the recent news of the $55M revamp of Ballard Stadium. Western Kentucky's program, one Selig previously oversaw during his tenure in Bowling Green, is an excellent example of how success takes time when making the jump from the FCS ranks to FBS. Selig: "You put this on the tracks, this stadium, rebirth of Foreman Field, in front of our growth and evolution? We're going to get there. We're definitely going to get there." - link
Baseball is on the rise at Louisiana Tech: AD McClelland wants to keep moving forward & plans to be "very thought:ful" on how his team helps to foster additional success for HC Goff. Goff would love to upgrade an indoor hitting facility in the near term with designs on new suites & a press box further down the road. McClelland points to special seating options around the edges of JC Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, similar to what Southern Miss does in Hattiesburg, that could include a capital gift & drive more revenue. - link
An editorial from the Southeast Missourian fully supports the hire of Interim AD Barke as SEMO's permanent AD. Points to his background in Cape Girardeau & within the university as he previously served in the President's office as keys to success. "So when he says 'the answer is we can and we will,' we take his words sincerely. He knows the ins and outs and the mistakes and successes of the athletic department, and he has a vision of how to get Southeast athletics to take the next steps...We wish him well as he directs the athletics department in a positive direction. We think he can and he will." - link
Interesting read with Cal MBB student-athlete Rabb on why he chose to return to Berkley for his sophomore season. "People that go to college for [only] one year, very few of them actually do well in the NBA. There are definitely guys that go above and beyond expectations and dominate the league in the future or stick around. But there are also plenty of guys who are in and out. Personally, I don’t want to be a guy who is in and out. I don’t believe if I would have left after my first year that that would happen. But at the same time, I want to be more comfortable on the floor. There are plenty of things I can do to help myself before I leave." - link
Behind the SportsBusiness Daily paywall, but it sounds like Major League Baseball Commish Manfred & his team continue to work with the NCAA on reforms that could align by the 2018 Draft. Continual odds between the college & pro games include the Draft taking place right in the middle of key post-season NCAA action. - link

Granular, but interesting exchange on Twitter between @SportsTVRatings & TV scheduling expert Sarzyniak (@mattsarz) on how Fox can compete with ESPN given the billions needed to acquire key TV rights against a significant carriage revenue advantage for the Worldwide Leader. Both generally come to the conclusion that Fox can push at the margins, but ESPN's money lead is the most significant data point in the landscape. - link

Waco Tribune's Whitaker: Baylor leadership penchant for secrecy could undermine campus turnaround in sexual-assault scandal. Starts with notes from portions of freshmen orientation last week with little said about the current sexual assault situation, though Police Chief Wigtil, Title IX Coordinator Crawford & Director of Wellness Patterson repeatedly emphasized university protocols around safety. Even though the Waco campus is technically dry, Whitaker looks a bit at the role alcohol plays on issues similar to those at hand. Overall, Whitaker pushes on more transparency from BU leadership. - link
Alabama AD Battle comments in connection to the Baylor situation & Crimson Tide FB HC Saban's framework of taking student-athletes due a second chance, "I read in the paper that if every coach, administrator and player doesn’t read the full Baylor report, then they have their head in the sand...We’ve done a pretty good job universitywide, but also in the athletic department of trying to educate what to do and how we would respond in a case where those things did happen...All coaches think they can save everybody, and Nick has had great success in taking (second-chance) players in his history, and some of them have really done well. And some haven’t. But probably more than not he has been able to change behavior. I think that’s part of his DNA." - link
Dallas Morning News columnist Carlton, who has been at the center of Big 12 developments, pens his thoughts on what divisional alignments could make the most sense. Starts with a North/South setup that would see Texas & Oklahoma in the same division. Other options could include a Big 8/SWC (with West Virginia) look, plus how annual reseeding could work that was mentioned by Iowa State Prez Leath last week. Some reader submissions listed, including one of "Future PAC" & "Future MAC." - link
Carlton also went in with a separate piece on why the Big 12 didn't kill talk of expansion & what it could mean down the road. "As long as the Big 12 has just 10 members, expansion talk will never be far away." When asked how seriously UCF & USF could be considered if the league does grow, Carlton believes they'd still be in the mix, but without a TV network, market size doesn't mean as much. Instead, "Football performance and academics probably matters more." - link
More Big 12 as NewsOK's Aber starts to consider what may happen in lead-up to 2025 when the league's grant of rights is up for renegotiation. It's again important to note the future schedule of such deals: Big Ten (2023), Pac-12 (2024), ACC (2027) & SEC (2034). Aber points directly to comments by Commish Bowlsby on how the current landscape doesn't support jumping into a dedicated network & how the network is one linchpin for expansion. - link
As the narrative for additional officiating transparency in college sports continues by fans, NBA Commish Silver talked late last week on how his league's execution of reviewing referee decisions in the last two minutes of close games has performed. "In this case, when you look at the Last Two-Minute Reports, what they demonstrate is the refs get it right roughly 90% of the time. I think this notion that, for example, if I were here and you were to say to me, ‘What does the league office think about a particular call?’ and my response was, ‘We won’t talk about that,’ it’s just not realistic in this day and age." Lots more. - link
