Anne Frank celebrates her 10th birthday with friends in Amsterdam.

Nine girls line up with their arms around each other and pose for a photo in front of the apartments in Merwedeplein, a neighborhood in south Amsterdam. It is Anne Frank’s 10th birthday party. Her father, Otto, snaps a photo.

The Frank family has been living in Amsterdam since they emigrated from Germany in 1933. It is just three months before the start of World War II and in 11 months the Netherlands will be invaded by Nazi Germany.
