Introducing SJC's newest addition, Oswin!

PSF's The Impossible Girl

Oswin joined the SJC family on 3/17 and has spent the last couple months learning how to be a dog and feel safe in the world. She will hopefully go on to train for and compete in agility, rally-o, obedience, and perhaps even flyball.  But for now, she is working on feeling confident in the world and learning basic household manners!

Oswin has definitely been a reminder that puppies are hard! It's been a blast but it has certainly been a life changer!

Summer Safety!

As the weather heats up, there are important safety things to remember to keep you and Fido safe while enjoying the great outdoors.

  • Water!!!  Make sure you bring plenty of water on walks and other adventures!  Hydration packs can make carrying a large quantity of water easy and convenient!

  • Sidewalks heat up fast! So, before taking your pup on a walk, place the back of your hand or your barefoot on the ground for 10 seconds and see if it is too hot.

  • Heat stroke can happen quickly!  Dogs can succumb to heat stroke just like people and things can go from safe to dangerous very quickly.  Take advantage of cooler morning and evening temperatures to exercise your pup... and see tip number 1, WATER!

New Class Offerings!

We are extremely excited to announce a new class location!  We will be offering training classes on Saturdays at North Pittsburgh Animal Behavior's shop located in the North Hills, in West Deer Twp (off Rt 8.).

4358 Gibsonia Rd. Gibsonia, PA 15044

Classes at this facility will be limited to 4 or 5 dogs at the most and dogs need to be fairly comfortable in a class with other dogs and comfortable with people.

We are working on selecting 2 classes to be the first offered at this location and have 4 options for you to pick from!  See the poll below the class descriptions to tell us which class(es) you'd be interested in attending!

Circus Dogs!-- Are you looking for some serious fun and seriously challenging training? Circus dogs is our trick dog class (clickers highly suggested but not required)! Dogs may learn typical tricks like spin, crawl, and roll over but we may also teach tricks like unrolling a carpet, jumping up on to objects, retrieve, jump through a hoop, and more! At the end of the class dogs may be eligible to submit a form to earn their Novice Trick Dog Title through Do More With Your Dog.

Fabulously Focused!--Does your dog not realize you exist on the end of the leash? Does he get completely distracted by environmental factors? Does she generally not pay attention to you? Does he struggle to focus on a task at hand (like completing a puzzle, performing a training sequence, or working through a problem)? Then Fabulously Focused is the class for you!

This class will teach students how to build up their dog's focus skill--first just generally building up focus and then how to maintain focus in distracting environments, build longer durations, and reduce reinforcers!

Got Control?--Does your dog struggle with making good choices in live, or struggle with skills like leave it, four on the floor, or stay?  Then this class is for you!  In Got Control, dogs will learn how to make good choices in life and have good self control around things they want or get them excited!  We will use food, toys, people, and other animals as distractions your dog will learn how to make good choices around.  We will play a wide variety of games  each week to help build up your dog's ability to think and make good choices.

Shape Up!--Are you looking to take your training to the next level and challenge yourself as a handler, while also teaching some awesome skills?  This advanced level class may be right up your alley!  Shape Up is a class designed around teaching handlers how to use a clicker (or unique verbal marker) to use a training methods called shaping and capturing to teach new skills.  Owners will learn how to set criteria, how to split that criteria into small steps, and how shape these steps into an end behavior.  Dogs may learn skills like backing up in a straight line, retrieving an object, send to a target, and more!  This class is just as much about the handlers as it is the dogs!

Tena's going to the Rally-O National Tournament!

From June 17th through June 19th, Tena will be in Cleveland, Ohio competing in the first ever World Cynosport National Rally Tournament.  This is the first year for this competition and it's been several years in the making.  At the end of the three-day trial, the top dog in each class will be named the tournament's champion for that level.  Dogs from all over the country will be competing at this exciting event.

Tena will be competing with both Shayne and Rio at the tournament.  Although a fair bit nervous, Tena is extremely excited to go out and have fun with her dogs!   With the new addition of Oswin, neither Shayne nor Rio are terribly well prepared but they don't need to be well-prepared to have a blast in the ring together.

Rio, who was the #19 dog overall in all of World Cynosport Rally in 2015 will be competing in the level three class and Shayne, who was the #7 dog in the ARCHX level will be competing in the veteran class (though don't try to tell Tena that Shayne's now a veteran!).

Keep an eye on SJC's Facebook Page for updates on the tournament!
