Spring into Summer!...

What a spring we’ve had, and now summer is turning into a cracker too with eruptions of colour all over the place.

Even Graham started to wonder if he was going mad when he realised just how much bedding he’d actually grown this year, but any doubts have been well and truly put to rest as you’ve been scooping it up in trolley fulls! At times we’ve even struggled to keep up with you! Bedding season will be coming to an end for us soon (though there will be thousands of colourful gardens in West Cornwall for many months to come because of it!) and we’ll instead be competing in the colour stakes with plenty more patio and perennial summer colour to keep those senses wowed in all manner of ways!

Daily re-stocking of benches brimming with lovely shrubs and hundreds of gorgeous perennials is top priority and the specials aisle is being continually replenished too, with constantly changing bargains to be had. Garden furniture has also been attracting plenty of attention, as those long summer evenings beckon, check out our ‘outdoor living’ section on your next visit.

Don’t forget to keep the garden well watered – we haven’t had that much substantial rain recently so don’t let your plants – especially newly planted ones –  fall victim to dehydration!

 Monthly Update...

1. Bedding is coming to an end, as mentioned above, so last chance to snap it up for great patio colour this summer! Pots and hanging baskets are also still available and ready to bring instant colour to your outside space this summer.

2. It’s all about perennials at this time of year as we head into summer. We grow thousands of them every year – so many different varieties you’ll be spoilt for choice.

3. Perhaps unsurprisingly, garden furniture has been popular recently and if you haven’t stopped by recently we have a big, new display in our ‘outdoor living’ section, along with other goodies like colourful BBQs, chimineas, fire pits and solar water features.

4. Our CHILDREN’S ANIMAL HUNT is back in full swing; with lots of new animal additions (and more coming soon!) just waiting to be spied! And while you might have to be a child to bag the FREE plant up for grabs, you don’t have to be one to enjoy the hunt! Find the big kid in you and get animal spotting!

watering can watering daffodils

There is a still lot to be getting on with in the garden in June, from hoeing those borders to pruning spring flowering shrubs to mowing the lawn.

Another biggie is thorough watering. Most problems with plant health at this time of year, in pots in particular, originate back to a lack of water. Light showers aren’t substantial enough to keep most plants well hydrated, so don’t assume that any rain is enough rain. An additional water top-up may be necessary.

pink geranium
Our plant of the month for June is zonal Geranium.

The zonal geranium is a bedding and patio biggie (also known as a pelargonium). Flowering from spring, right through autumn, and with so many different varieties to choose from, they are a popular choice with gardeners’ novice and experienced, and you’ve been taking them home on mass!

Simple to look after they’ll bring plenty of colourful pleasure to the patio this summer.

The nursery now has a new triple span tunnel to its name, thanks to the help of Northern Polytunnels!...And in other developments, work has begun on extending the overflow carpark, and working on to make space for circa 100 more cars – much needed during our busiest times, and particularly when thinking ahead to our big Christmas weekends…and other events taking place here at the garden centre in the future.
