'Look Ever Forward' With Matthew Lunn
It has been just over a month since I joined NGIWA, and already I am getting a real feel for where our members believe we should be heading. The clear message is that it is time to move forward.

Each week I aim to meet at least six members and their operations, as well as approach new people within our industry who may want to join and add value to our Association. Two key issues that I am constantly reminding myself that must be addressed when I am out and about is, how to get more member involvement above and beyond just paying the subscription and secondly, potential members need to be informed of the many benefits joining can bring. The answer is clear - communication!

A few months ago I was less qualified to state why
NGIWA is a worthy component to your business however, today I can see that this Association has the potential to be Western Australia's peak horticultural organisation. Unfortunately, we need a few more rungs on the Board to really grow so that those around us want to be a part of all that we do within the industry.

The good news is we have a sound base from which to develop our potential. Jane
Cleary, sees to our daily administration, and is already working on developing our website for delivery very soon.  I see this as being an essential component of our front of shop. Our finances are stable and our members come from a variety of professional businesses that can also assist the Association in reaching out across all areas of horticulture and in doing so strengthen our name.

I have asked the
NGIWA Board to list the benefits of NGIWA as well as identify our competitors. Understanding and improving our product, and placing ourselves in the market as a leader, is the key to moving forward in the coming twelve months.

You are all invited to meet me and fellow members at a free breakfast at The
Shorehouse in Swanbourne on June 29th where we can further discuss these goals and work closely together to achieve success. So please put this date in your diary. Our success depends on your support!

Member Profile - Baileys Fertiliser
As I started compiling my first round of members to go and visit I was keen to reacquaint my friendship with Kim Bailey.  I have known Kim for the best part of twenty years; working closely with him and his team on fertiliser programs at Curtin University, on industry committees and on Curtin 100.1 FM. I hold Kim in high regard when it comes to business advice and in his words, “you’ve always got to know where that next buck comes from".
As I head to Baileys HQ I knew I was going to be grilled on the merits of the Association and how it was being run. Kim always likes to know the deal straight up. As I enter through the main doors I am met with the same décor that I have known for the past 20 years; brown brick walls and a gallery of awards.

I head into his office and am greeted with that cry of “Matt, come on in”.  Files are on the floor and Kim leans back in his favourite desk chair against the wall. Our conversation quickly leads onto the Association and he queries the role of the Board. “Do they have portfolios, what are the KPI’s for
NGIWA?"  I knew I was going to be grilled!

Thankfully Board member (and Kim's daughter) Gen appears with my cuppa and she is able to support me in his question. We chat further and he reminds me of the good old days of Garden Week at Perry Lakes and how money was just thrown around for such events and the Association was a thriving concern. “Matt the thing is, it’s got to run like a business. It can’t stand still and hope to survive.”

A tour of the Baileys operations by Gen soon follows and as we walk through the production area, we see household gardening products like Bailey’s Premium Potting Mix and Grosorb starting their journey. These are some of Bailey’s best sellers.

Lunch is provided at Kim’s favourite café in Old Rockingham and our discussions soon lead onto sponsorship and an alliance with
NGIWA. Kim has always been a great supporter of our industry and has always believed that to receive, you must put back. We talk about the value of sponsorship and why businesses enter into such arrangements and also why they shy away.

As I head for my car to return home, Gen asks me what I learned today. I quickly think on my feet. “It’s the importance of thinking ahead of your competitors, ensuring we deliver key performance indicators and produce quality in all we do”.  What I should have said was the value of friendship.

NGI Structure Review Committee Visit
Following the NGIWA Board meeting on Tuesday 14th June, we hosted the NGIA Structure Review Forum where eight members attended to have their say. The presentation and review process was conducted by Gary Eyles (Chairman), Glenn Fenton (Deputy Chair) and Gena Campbell who posed several questions to the group, looking at what they expected from the state and national associations.

Key discussion points included the present NGI structure, and what everyone felt should be retained and what should be considered for change.

Overall there was common support in regards to the importance of biosecurity engagement and management, continued technical support for members by an Industry Development Officer, the importance of  member benefits, concerns over the future of DAFWA, assistance in funding and technical support and the importance of promoting and providing practical business support to both existing and future independent garden centre managers.

A formal report outlining recommendations to the NGIA Board and State/Territory Boards will be available by the end of November 2016. The NGIWA Board will formally submit its recommendations by mid-July and would appreciate feedback and comments from members who were unable to attend the forum.  You can do this by contacting Matt Lunn on 0410 714 207 or emailing reception@ngiwa.com.au.

Plant Merchant - The New App To Help Nurseries
Nursery retailers and wholesalers have a lot to do. That’s no secret. From day to day work with the green life to management tasks like ordering, invoicing and inventory, and yes, it can get crazy. That’s why some clever nursery workers, the team at Plant Merchant, have created an app for nursery workers. The whole idea is to save serious time and supercharge efficiency – time is, after all, money.

Plant Merchant is set to revolutionise the logistical processes of the industry, and it’s easy to use. Really easy. If you can use a smart phone, then you can benefit from the Plant Merchant app. In fact, its versatility is unmatched, allowing wholesalers to utilise their existing smartphone, tablet or desktop technology and manage orders from anywhere in the nursery! Moving stock, pruning or picking orders in the greenhouse? No problem, simply get out your phone right where you are to get an urgent job done. It’s really that good.

Plant Merchant is a direct business-to-business tool. In a nutshell, it links nurseries and their retailers, so nurseries can see all their retailers in the one easy place. They can literally “snap a photo” of their plants on their smartphone and upload them directly and instantly through the in-built camera. This is a feature no other green life technology tool offers to all retailers. The retailer can then view the seasonal photos of plants, place orders and track spending. It begs the question – how have we survived before? Plant Merchant utilises Cloud Storage – another exclusive feature - meaning the entire database is live, secure and infinite. The app’s creators really wanted to make life easier by automating the process of updating stock levels. Imagine not having to update stock levels manually! By doing so, they have seen a huge increase in productivity. With the
launching of Plant Merchant, now everybody has access to this godsend.
Sounds good, so is it affordable? Well yes, that was the maker’s intent too. They wanted everyone to be able to afford the app. Plant Merchant has two types of value-packed subscriptions, one catering for small to medium nurseries and another for larger production operations (with features like unlimited ordering). It’s time to get off the old paper systems and start making nursery-life easier for you!

To find out more about available subscriptions, and how the Plant Merchant app can work for you, jump online at www.plantmerchant.com.au or call (02) 6681 5294. The team at Alchemy Innovations are happy to walk you through the features and benefits, plus, they’ll always be there to provide support.
