Hi Moms and Dads

This newsletter is a very important form of communication. If you do not receive one via email, please let Jane have your email so that we can send you one and if you would prefer a hard copy in your child’s pocket, please let Jane know so that we can do this for you!

Special thanks to our wonderful children and parents who supported the LOFOB Blind Buddy Day on Friday. We raised just over R600 that we will be sending to LOFOB. We are so grateful for your kindness.
Some children did not have their R10 but wanted a sticker so we still have a few left if anyone wants to buy this week. Please just chat to your child’s teacher.

Thanks for all the reply slips that have come in, please continue to let us know as soon as possible if your child will be staying at FHPPS in 2017..

Please remember that Thursday this week is a Public Holiday and Friday is a School Holiday and THERE WILL BE NO HOLIDAY CARE OR AFTERCARE ON THAT DAY. THE WHOLE SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED!!

It is with sadness that I inform you all that Shante’s Dad passed away on the weekend. We would like to extend our wishes and sympathy to Shante and her family and send love and condolences to them all. Shante will be off work this week. Mastoera and Cheryl will continue to fill in for her.

The challenge is still on everyone!!! Who is ‘GETTING BACK TO BASICS’
Week 9!!
STRESS FREE MORNINGS

The alarm goes off and the pressure is on……..another morning to conquer.
Cut down the stress by arming yourself with routines that work. In this way your child can start the day on a positive, happy note.

THE WAKE UP CALL
-Non- negotiable bed times will mean greater co-operation from the reluctant riser next morning.
-A whisper in the ear and gentle back rub may work better than the long-distance yell as you frantically race for the shower.
-The lure of clothes warmed on the heater in winter or a fresh glass of fruit juice in a funkie cup reserved for summer mornings, may prise those eyes open a little more easily.

BREAKFAST BUFFET
-Let them eat with you or while listening to story tapes and not T.V.
-Use a favourite mug or cup each morning for the reluctant eater.
-Set the table the night before with bowls, cereal or spreads.
-Reserve a low cupboard with fun breakfast snacks they can access, choose and serve themselves, for example: dried fruit, raisins, a variety of cereals in small, easy to open containers(kids love things in miniature), snack bars, energy bars and nuts.
-Freeze bran muffins, pancakes or crumpets and defrost on demand.
-Get to know your child’s natural morning hunger pattern. Some like to eat first thing while others prefer to wait, which often means losing out until snack time at school. An energy drink or car snack might tide them over.

DAWDLE, DAWDLE, PLAY, PLAY
-Ensure that favourite toys and other distractions are packed away the night before. Out of sight, out of mind.
-Do not let them into the T.V. room or outside even while you are trying to get ready and need them to be occupied for a few minutes. A few books and some song tapes may be easier to drag them away from.
-Let them decide on an outfit the night before and lay it out to avoid the inevitable disagreements and tantrums, while also encouraging independence and self-confidence.

RELIABLE ROUTINES
-Pack school bags the night before and complete all homework before bed-time.
-Place important items, such as school bags and car keys in the same place every evening.
-Boil the kettle on the way to the shower.
-Allow children to bath or shower in the evening. A quick face wash and teeth brushing session should suffice for the morning.
-For big families, staggering wake-up times may mean less queuing for the bathroom and loo. This may give you those extra few seconds to have quality time with each child, starting his day off feeling good about himself.

EQ: Solving problems together
General: Birds
Letter:  K k
Numbers: 1 -10
Thank you for coming in to meet me and to collect your child's report. If you have not arranged a time as yet then please come in and see me to arrange a time for a meeting.
Outing- We are walking to ‘Dominos Pizza’ on Wednesday 15 June. Please sign and return the orange outing form. The children need to wear closed shoes and they can wear their school T-shirt over a long sleeve top.
This term in EQ lessons as well as in other lessons and when playing games the children were given various challenges and tasks to complete in their group. Some groups did very well and they've identified who is strong in certain areas as well as identifying good leaders.  Last week the children were moved around when working and have had to work with different children. Most of them coped very well.
Our new theme is birds and our last letter for this term is K k - kettle, kite, king and kestrel. Please send in books or pictures about the theme and relating to the letter. The children feel so proud when they talk about the things they bring so I urge you to help them find objects or pictures.
Skills to extend at home- name writing, tying a shoe lace, skipping with a rope, identifying letter and numbers in the environment.
Dads please remember the sausage braai on Friday 24. You can come to school to spend time with your child from 8 am - 11 am. I hope you will be able to come even if it’s just for an hour. The children have been talking about it and are excited about their daddies coming to school.
Enjoy the week and the long weekend.

EQ:  Solving difficult problems with friends
IQ:  Transport and Road Safety
Focus:  Auditory memory - remembering an instruction
Number concepts:  Number Recognition 1 - 10, More/Less/Equal
Thank you to all those who brought in the R10 for Blind Buddy day.  All the children were very proud to wear their stickers in aid of the Blind.
We will be discussing "Transport and Road Safety" over the next two weeks.  Please encourage your children to bring factual books or story books to do with the theme.  We continue to discuss "Solving difficult problems with friends" and encourage the children to use the Problem solving process.
Thank you to all those parents who are adding colourful food to their children's lunchboxes.  I have noticed a change.  Colourful lunchboxes = Healthy lunchboxes.  Water instead of juice is much healthier.
I would like to encourage you to play memory games with your children to build on their ability to remember visually where something is.  We have been playing the "Shopping Game" over the last two weeks which they have loved.  You can also choose five items and cover them with a tea towel.  See if your child can remember the items hidden.  To make it more difficult, see if they can remember it in the correct order.
Continue to play number games to build on their understanding of numbers.  Eg: card games, Uno, snakes and ladders, memory matching games using cards
Please diarise Wednesday 22 June, as the Starfish class will be having an "Educational Games Day and Pyjama Party" during the morning.  All Starfish children may come to school in their pyjamas, if they want to and may bring one educational game from home to play with their friends.  They must know how to play the game so they can explain it to their friends.  It may be games like Jenga, Uno, Bingo, Memory games, card games etc. NO ELECTRONIC GAMES ALLOWED AT ALL.
Please remind all dad's about our "Dad's Day and Sausage Braai" at school on Friday 24 June.  All dads are encouraged to join their children at school for the day for some fun doing art, playing games, singing etc.  We look forward to seeing you all here.  If a dad is unable to make it, please ensure there is a special person in their place.
Please remember this week is a short one, as Thursday 16 is a Public Holiday and Friday 17th is a School Holiday.
Reports are to be handed out on Monday 20 June.
Have a fabulous week.
