Summer fun with the Kidz Karting Experience

So it’s finally summer. The kids won’t have any homework for a little while and they’ve just aced all their tests. Now, with two months ahead of them, what’s the plan? After the first few days, chances are that they’ll be tired of the marathon Hot Wheels play dates and the cartoon binge-watching sessions. Soon you’ll hear that phrase that every parent hates: “I’m bored!” So, to stop you from panicking too much, Bushy Park has worked to take your kids’ summer to the next level.

We are extremely proud to offer Kidz Karting for all the mini speed junkies out there. Now your kids from as little as five years old can get in their own kart and whiz around the track like the pros! And don’t worry, Mum and Dad, safety remains our number 1 priority: all our kidz karts are equipped with all the usual protective bits and bobs, are speed-controlled and can be remotely closed down. Our experienced staff will give the aspiring Lewis Hamiltons a detailed step-by-step safety demonstration and briefing before they speed off. We promise maximum fun with minimum risk.

And you’re more than welcome to join them on-track for a group session (just don’t let them beat you by too much, you’d never hear the end of it!). Organise a family fun day or even an unforgettable birthday event for the kids; with our 10 per cent discount for groups of 10, it’s definitely the more the merrier with us.

So, treat your young ones to this unique summer experience. At only $35, it’s guaranteed fun at an unbeatable price. Join the latest Summer Kraze - Kidz Karting!

Film review of Barbados Festival of Speed out now!

Sunday, May 8, 2016, is a day that will last in the memories of the island’s motor sport fan base for years to come, especially those young karters who raced against three-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton . . . and then found him waiting in Pitlane to ‘high-five’ each and every one, as they returned at the end of the Handicap Race.

While Hamilton was without doubt the star of the show at the inaugural Barbados Festival of Speed, there was so much more going on. From Monster Trucks to Micro Bangers, via Freestyle Motocross, Supersport Bikes and local talent in the Suzuki Challenge Series, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The nine-hour programme of entertainment had opened with a parade of more than 80 classic and retro cars and cruiser bikes, as the Barbados Defence Force Zouave Band and Dancing Africa turned Bushy Park into spectacle of colour and sound. The lunchtime concert, featuring Leadpipe & Saddis and Edwin Yearwood accompanied by scores of local schoolchildren, was motor sport’s contribution to the island’s 50th Anniversary Independence celebrations.

If the memories are beginning to fade, worry not, as a half-hour review of the day’s activities, filmed by Merville Lynch Productions, is now available. It includes highlights of Saturday night’s Dinner with Lewis, including a relaxed interview Hamilton clearly enjoyed with local personality Belle Holder and contributions from other stakeholders.

BKA racers to see action under floodlights

Thanks to sponsorship from Suzuki Caribbean and Simpson Motors, two forthcoming rounds of the Barbados Karting Association’s (BKA) 2016 SDRR Motorsport/Chefette Championship will be run under floodlights, but on different dates. Round six, slated for Sunday, July 10, will now run on Saturday, July 2.

The second date change will allow BKA racers to perform on a bigger stage than usual; Sunday, September 11 is being switched to the evening of Saturday, September 3, to appear on the schedule of round three of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship.

At round five of the BKA Championship in the middle of June, Christian Hinds (X30), Zane Maloney (Easykart 100) and visiting US Junior National Champion Kyle Kirkland (Easykart 125 Light) each enjoyed a clean sweep of his class. Having started from pole, Hinds won all three races, with Ricky Kirton, Calvin Bartlett and Reco Alkins sharing the podium places. Maloney led pole-sitter Sebastian Thompson home three times, with Kayleigh Catwell (twice) and Dana Bradshaw sharing the third-place finishes. Kirkland was dominant on his way to a maximum score, with Joshua Maloney (3-2-2) and Aiden Fortier (2-3-3) the podium finishers.

Competition was as close as ever in Easykart 60, pole-sitter Charlie Kerridge, Alex Powell, Calem Maloney and Kyffin Simpson covered by less than one second in qualifying. Kerridge won two races, with Simpson victor in the second after Kerridge and Powell touched and spun. After finishing second and third in the first two races, Maloney crashed out of the third, causing a red flag and restart. In Easykart 125 Masters, Stuart Garcia prevailed over pole-sitter, Jamaica’s Chris McFarlane, with victories in the first and third races, McFarlane winning the second.

Rookies and records at BADD Drag Warz 2

The Barbados Association of Dragsters and Drifters (BADD) welcomed eight newcomers at the Goodyear and Courtesy Garage-supported Drag Warz 2 in the middle of the month, on a day when drivers achieved personal best and record times.

At the wheel of his Honda Civic, Rookie Damien Neblett won the 8.0-9.5secs category with a personal best of 9.003s, beating the more experienced Antonio Holder (Mitsubishi Lancer GSR) in the final, having already seen off a number seasoned campaigners during free practice and qualifying.

It was Corey Stanford (Toyota Corolla), who grabbed the honours after beating Jeremy Greenidge (Mitsubishi Mirage) in the final of the 7.0secs category with a time of 7.570s.  However, Greenidge turned in the day’s fastest time of 7.146s in an earlier run.

Darren Lashley (Toyota Starlet) beat Shone Joseph (Nissan Pulsar) to win the 9.5-10.0secs class with a time of 9.684s.

In the merged 10.0-16.0secs categories, Andre Walcott (Suzuki Swift) prevailed with a time of 10.757s, beating motor sport veteran Colin Goodman, who had issues with his Opel Tigra. Graeme Finlayson (Westfield) set a new island two-wheel drive record with a time of 7.339s, while Caribbean cycle champion Kelvin Daniel rode his Kawasaki ZX10R to the day’s overall fastest time of 6.182s and a finishing speed of 123 mph.

Fireworks at Sol Rally Barbados Bushy Park Start

Jamaica’s Jeffrey Panton and Mike Fennell Jnr claimed back-to-back victories on Sol Rally Barbados 2016, which started with a spectacular evening of entertainment at Bushy Park Barbados on the first Friday in June. The huge crowds which packed the facility enjoyed more than four hours of non-stop action, which climaxed in a stunning firework display.

And there had been fireworks on-track as well: double European Rally Champion, Martinique’s Simon Jean-Joseph (Ford Focus WRC08), who finished second to Panton last year, was fastest on the two 2.5-kilometre stages on the Race Of Champions parallel track. Both SJ-J and World Rally Championship contender Elfyn Evans (Ford Fiesta R5) had incurred 10secs jump-start penalties, however, dropping SJ-J to fifth and Evans from third to ninth, so England’s Kevin Procter (Ford Fiesta) and Rob Swann (Subaru Impreza S12B) were second and third.

Panton led throughout the remaining 21 special stages as Sol RB16 covered the length and breadth of the island . . . Jean-Joseph retired from second place with differential failure on Sunday morning, briefly promoting Evans, who had worked back through the field. His Fiesta did not have the legs of the 2-litre WRC cars, however, and he was passed by 13-time winner Roger Skeete (Impreza WRC S12B), who finished second.

Unlike the last two years, when the much-anticipated two-wheel-drive battle petered out almost before it got started, Sol RB16 delivered performances to savour. Roger Mayers (WR Starlet) was fourth overall overnight Friday, ahead of Josh Read (Starlet) and Dane Skeete (Peugeot 306 Maxi). While Skeete dropped back late on Saturday, the tussle between the Starlets continued until the finish, Mayers finishing fourth overall – equalling the highest-placed 2wd finish – with Read fifth.

Our monthly update on other goings-on behind the scenes at Bushy Park Barbados:

• Bushy Park is far more than just a motor racing facility, with a host of other options available. We can tailor corporate events to suit any needs and the family is welcome, too. Our team-building events can be customised to your requirements, with food & beverage options also available, and we have a variety of hospitality areas to accommodate groups large or small. On the family front, we can facilitate Fun Days, Summer Camps and more . . . particularly with the introduction of our Kidz Karting from July. Just call 256-0114 and tell us what you’d like to do . . .

• Congratulations to Zane Maloney, who continues to win accolades on the United States karting scene. Most recently, he finished second in Yamaha and fourth in the Swift classes, despite driving the Wisconsin track for the first time against competitors who had raced it the week before. Zane is now looking forward to the WKA and SKUSA meets in Indiana next month . . .

• Pupils and staff from Harrison College toured Bushy Park Barbados this month and, if the happy faces were any indication, then everyone enjoyed the morning tour of the facility and the introduction to Karting Experiences. If you are a parent or teacher and think that the youngsters in your care would enjoy a visit to Bushy Park, then call 256-0114 to book your School Tour.
