Celebrating 125 Years: 1891-2016

Leland and Jane Stanford decided to honor their only son, who died of typhoid fever at age 15, by founding a university and decreeing that "the children of California shall be our children." Last fall, Stanford launched a celebration of this 125-year legacy.

In 1941, Hoover Tower was dedicated to commemorate Stanford's 50th anniversary year. The 285-foot tower is named in honor of President Herbert Hoover, who was a member of the university’s Pioneer Class of 1895.

Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station was established 124 years ago on Monterey Bay. It was the first marine research facility on the Pacific Coast and the second in the United States.

Alumnus' poem for Stanford
The 125th anniversary inspired Bob Simon, BA '53, MBA '59, to write a new poem, Our Alma Mater, celebrating Stanford at 125 years young. Bob also wrote a poem 25 years ago for Stanford's centennial. Click here to hear Bob's poem.
