Businesses face ‘uncertainty’ as PM quits
Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce Chief Executive Paul Faulkner today forecast a ‘period of uncertainty’ for business in the wake of the historic EU vote and David Cameron’s decision to quit as PM.
Mr Faulkner called for ‘unity and calm’ following the referendum outcome – and looked forward to welcoming a new Prime Minister to Birmingham at this autumn’s Conservative Party Conference.
The Chambers chief executive said: “The Prime Minister’s announcement means we will have no clarity on when Article 50 of the Lisbon treaty will be activated in the immediate future.
“This does mean that businesses will be operating in a period of uncertainty, but also gives some much needed breathing space and time for the country to reconcile and Government to heal the rifts that have risked splitting the Conservative party.
“His call for unity and calm very much resonates with our own. This has been the most divisive debate of my lifetime. It pitted generations against each other and divided our United Kingdom. Now we need to come together to forge a new future. We know there will be no changes to the UK’s official relationship with the EU for some months at least.
“With every change comes opportunity and I would ask our business community to keep up the positivity – in Greater Birmingham there is still plenty of business to be done.
“This year’s Conservative Party Conference will be taking place in Birmingham and we look forward to potentially welcoming a new Prime Minister to our great city.
“At the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce we will continue to keep our members informed of the latest developments on what, no doubt, will be a fast-moving agenda.”
