A pile of broken glass? Or an information-rich puzzle?

Would you like the ability to examine these fragments and be capable of:

  • Recognizing the type of load for this breakage?
  • Identifying the individual fragments that contain the fracture origin?
  • Determining the type of flaw at the fracture origin?
  • Concluding if the cause was load magnitude or flaw severity?
  • Understanding how to avoid similar breakage in the future?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then we have the perfect training for you. In fact our pledge is you will be able to answer all of these questions by the time you have completed one of our “Fracture 1: Testing and Breakage Diagnosis of Glass Containers” Training Seminars. We offer four open enrollment sessions throughout the year in Butler, PA, USA, two sessions in Munich, Germany and two sessions in Krakow, Poland. Alternatively, we can conduct private training at your location. Visit our Seminar Catalogue to register or learn more.
NEWS
AGR to launch new Chinese translation of website to coincide with Training Seminars in Beijing.
The Chinese translation of the American Glass Research website will be launched to facilitate understanding of the consulting, training and testing services that are available to this growing and strategically desirable glass market.  The website launch provides additional resources to Mr. Yong Zhu, the sales representative responsible for promoting AGR services in China. In conjunction with the website launch, AGR will be conducting for the first time, two open enrollment seminars in Beijing, China to members of the Chinese Glass Expert Committee.  AGR’s Manager of Research Services, Bill Slusser and Senior Scientist, Peter de Haan will be conducting “Coating Technology”, July 4th-5th and “F1: Testing & Breakage Diagnosis”, July 6th-8th.   To learn more about these and other seminars check out our Seminar Catalogue.

AGR joins Glass Trend.

AGR has accepted an invitation to become a member of GlassTrend, a consortium of worldwide operating industries and institutes working in the field of glass and glass production. The association aims to co-ordinate research and development activities to improve the competitive strength of glass industries, its suppliers and customers. AGR has nearly 90 years of experience in glass testing, research and training making it a natural fit for membership and is looking forward to the opportunity to share expertise while gaining additional insights into the industry.
FEATURE STORY

The legacy of AGR founder lives on in Community Park and White Papers.

Dr. Frank Preston, who founded AGR in 1927 as a venture dedicated to the pursuit of understanding the response of glass to external forces, left behind many treasures. Most notable among them are a Community Park, located on the site of the original testing laboratories and a vast library of Published Papers that are being re-released to the public. Both stand as lasting tributes to his legacy.

Preston Park has enjoyed glowing reviews for its combination of historical significance and idyllic natural landscape and was the setting for the accompanying photo, captured by AGR employee, Karen Link.  The photograph, entitled “Among the Grasses” captures wet lily-of-the valley blooms within the wild grass section of the park. It was featured in the March/April 2016 issue of Pennsylvania Magazine.

As part of our continuing, historic legacy series, another Dr. Preston paper is being made available through our website. The paper, entitled “Bottle Breakage – Causes and Types of Fractures”, was published in 1939 but remains very much relevant today as it documents the findings of Dr. Preston and his team of researchers in their search to uncover the fundamentals of fracture diagnosis.  The 26-page paper was originally published in the Bulletin of the American Ceramic Society and contains a wealth of information. It remains an ideal primer for anyone trying to develop an understanding of the underlying principles of Bottle Breakage.

The paper places Dr. Preston’s thirst for the development of knowledge on full display.  It also showcases the wonder this knowledge can illicit through observations such as,  ”in most cases of breakage, the complete fracturing of the bottle takes place in something like one-thousandth part of a second”. You can accompany Dr. Preston on this journey of discovery by reading this recently posted document on our website.  Visit the White Paper Library to download it.
DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know...

Syringes exhibit significantly different defect types and breakage patterns. They also are subjected to differing problematic conditions than observed for other pharmaceutical glassware, such as vials. These differences can be attributed to their unique shape, alternative manufacturing methods and the specialized nature of their usage conditions.

Nevertheless, a combination of fracture analysis skills and a thorough understanding of the manufacturing process, filling process, and usage conditions, will provide a wealth of information that allows for the identification of the root cause of the breakage. In the majority of cases it is possible to distinguish between breakage that results from glass manufacturing conditions, filling line issues, or even those due to subsequent usage.

Understanding the differences associated with syringes (and cartridges or pens) ensures that the results of your fracture analysis will be valuable. Want to learn more about pharmaceutical breakage issues? Attend our Seminar “Testing and Fracture Diagnosis of Pharmaceutical Glassware”  this Fall in Butler, PA Sep 27th-29th or Munich, Germany Oct 24th-26th.

TRAINING

Training

In response to continuing customer requests for additional Training seminars, AGR had added two more “F1: Testing and Breakage Diagnosis” sessions in the US.  The first session in June quickly sold out while the second session scheduled for November 8th -11th still has availability.  Additionally, efforts to expand seating capacity are underway for the Butler, PA, USA Campus.

For the first time in Europe, an open enrollment offering of our “Testing and Fracture Diagnosis of Pharmaceutical Glassware” seminar will be conducted in Munich, Germany October 24th -26th. Munich is also the location for our “Coating Technology” seminar held October 17th -18th and another “Fracture 1” session held October 19th -21st.

We will visit Krakow, Poland twice this year! For the first time we will offer the “Glass Container Technology” seminar held August 30th-31st and two of our most popular seminars enjoy return engagements. They are “Lightweighting and Design”, held September 5th-6th and “Fracture 1”, held September 7th -9th.

In November we will return to Krakow, Poland for another premiere. The “Glass Plant Audit” seminar will be offered for the first time in Europe as an open enrollment seminar on November 28th – 29th. It doesn’t end there however, as we have added a second “Fracture 1” seminar from November 30th to December 2nd as the September seminar also sold out quickly.
