Notice to Livestock Haulers

The Nebraska State Patrol’s Carrier Enforcement Division has been notified of an increase in the number of small pigs falling out of livestock haulers while traveling on Nebraska highways. We would like to remind all carriers that they are responsible for load securement, including livestock. Please take the necessary measures to ensure your equipment is designed in such a manner to prevent small animals from escaping while in transport.

Tour de Nebraska Bicycle Tour: 430 cyclists on roads

Will visit North Central Nebraska June 22-26

A total of 430 cyclists on the Tour de Nebraska bicycle adventure will roll out of Springview on Wednesday, June 22. With a record number of cyclists on this year’s Tour de Nebraska annual bicycle adventure, it’s even more critical for motorists and cyclists to use extra caution on the road.
Tips for Motorists
Nebraska law requires that the driver of a vehicle overtaking a bicycle proceeding in the same direction shall exercise due care, which shall include, but not be limited to, leaving a safe distance of no less than three feet clearance, when passing a bicycle and shall maintain such clearance until safely past the overtaken bicycle.
Passing: Do not pass a cyclist until you can see that you can safely do so. Nebraska’s 3-foot law requires you to leave at least 3 feet between your vehicle and the bicycle. Make sure you account for your mirrors in the required 3-foot passing width, as serious accidents result from mirrors clipping cyclists. Passing too closely can also create drag from your car that can pull a cyclist off balance and lose control.
Take it easy: Besides giving cyclists that extra breathing room, it's best for drivers to pass them slowly and smoothly.
Honking: Avoid honking your horn, because it might startle cyclists. Most cyclists wear mirrors and are aware of approaching vehicles. If you absolutely have to, just make it a “friendly tap of the horn” to let the cyclist know you are there.
The noncompetitive circle tour will start and end in Springview, It will then proceed to overnights at Bassett, Ainsworth and Valentine, and back to Springview on Sunday, June 26.

Make a Safe Landing, when it’s time to drop the trailer: Visually inspect before cranking and report any problems to your maintenance department. Maintain good posture - brace yourself against the trailer with non-cranking hand. Avoid twisting your back while applying force as it can increase the likelihood of a back injury. Keep your face out of the handle swing arc. Don’t 'speed' spin the crank. Check for decal showing direction for raising.

On-Highway diesel fell 0.5 cents last week

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that the price for U.S. on-highway diesel fell 0.5 cents from last week to $2.426 per gallon, the first weekly decrease in eleven weeks. The EIA is the statistical agency of the U.S. Department of Energy. The national average price is 43.3 cents, or 15.1% lower than at the same time last year.Diesel prices were up across most of the country this week. The Midwest’s price was down 0.4 cents to $2.386. The East Coast price decreased 0.6 cents to $2.443. New England’s price increased by 0.2 cents to $2.494. In the Gulf Coast, the retail price of diesel was down 1.1 cents at $2.296 per gallon.

Vehicle Heatstroke

Vehicular heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash related deaths in children under 14.  37 children die from vehicle heatstroke each year.  As impossible as it seems, parents or caregivers can become distracted leading to this heartbreaking situation  This tragedy is 100% preventable.  Remember:
• Never leave a child alone in a parked car, even with the windows rolled down, or air conditioning on. Children’s body temperature can heat up 3 to 5 times faster than adults’. A core temperature of 107 degrees is lethal.
• Always look in both the front and back of the vehicle before locking the door and walking way.
• Heatstroke can occur in temperatures as low as 57 degrees. On an 80-degree day, temperatures inside a vehicle can reach deadly levels in just 10 minutes.
• Never let children play in an unattended vehicle. Teach them a vehicle is not a play area.
• Always lock your vehicle doors and trunk and keep the keys out of a child’s reach. If a child is missing, quickly check all vehicles, including the trunk.
