Cancer Experts Meet in Boston for Moonshot Summit

On Wednesday, June 29, more than 100 experts gathered at Museum of Science, Boston for the New England Cancer Moonshot Summit, hosted by the Tufts Medical Center Cancer Center, New England Cancer Specialists (NECS), and Lowell General Hospital Cancer Center. The purpose of the event was to share updates and discuss efforts to accelerate progress in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care, with a focus on community oncology.

The National Cancer Moonshot Initiative was launched by the White House earlier this year to eliminate cancer by accelerating the development of new cancer detection and treatments. Local communities were asked to bring together providers, researchers, advocates, philanthropists, health care companies, and others at local Moonshot Summits held in close concert with the National Cancer Moonshot Summit in Washington, DC.

Panel discussions were moderated by Andrew Evens, DO, MS, FACP, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Tufts Cancer Center; Tracey F. Weisberg, MD, President and lead physician at NECS; and Murat A. Anamur, MD, Medical Director of Cancer Services Chairman, Cancer Committee, Lowell General Hospital Cancer Center. Topics included:
  • The impact of cancer societies and foundations towards success of the National Cancer Moonshot
  • Disrupting the status quo to accelerate more cures for cancer
  • Leveraging unique resources for cancer precision medicine (this panel featured Tufts University President Anthony Monaco, MD, PhD; Tufts CTSI Dean Harry Selker, MD, MSPH; and Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine Dean Deborah Kochevar, DVM, PhD, DACVCP).
In addition, a video was broadcast of Vice President Joe Biden's remarks at the summit in Washington, DC.

NCATS Develops SMART IRB Reliance Platform

Last month, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a policy on the use of a Single Institutional Review Board of Record (sIRB) for multi-site research. All proposals submitted on or after May 25, 2017 for multi-site studies involving non-exempt human subjects research will be required to comply.

The use of a single IRB will streamline IRB review and prevent delays from the process of obtaining ethical approval from multiple IRBs. The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) and the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program are developing a Streamlined, Multi-site, Accelerated Resources for Trials (SMART) IRB Reliance Platform to help sites comply with the new NIH policy.

In May, representatives from Tufts CTSI and Tufts Medical Center attended a SMART IRB workshop in Bethesda, Maryland to learn about using the platform. Additional details about SMART IRB will be announced soon.
