Volunteer in the BWCAW

Gain a new wilderness experience and learn about all of the work that goes into keeping our lakes and forests healthy and campgrounds and trails open for use.

This summer the Northwoods Volunteer Connection is offering three opportunities to help maintain recreational resources in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Volunteers work side-by-side with Forest Service Wilderness Rangers to complete these projects, camping in the Wilderness for the duration of the trip.

Food and most of the camping equipment volunteers need for these projects are provided. A complete packing list can be found here.

Spotted Knapweed Removal Project

Sat., July 23rd 9:30 am - 2:00 pm
Isabella, MN
Lunch provided.
Spotted knapweed, a non-native, invasive plant, is growing in a meadow that was once home to an Environmental Learning Center in Isabella. Volunteers will remove spotted knapweed by hand to prepare the area for a planting in the fall. The goal is to encourage native plants that will support pollinators and to keep non-native plants from growing in the area.
More information and directions can be found here.
