St Leonards Primary School create an indigenous garden

Bellarine Bayside, together with Bellarine Landcare, supported St Leonards Primary School Grade 4 class in the establishment of a starfish-shaped indigenous garden. The garden has been created around their commemorative 1975 centenary sundial and will provide a diverse habitat to support native bees and butterflies. The plants used, including native wildflowers, grasses, climbers and shrubs, were supplied by both Bellarine Bayside and Bellarine Landcare after a previous discussion to determine the requirements of the garden, design elements and biodiversity values.

Winter Community Planting Days

On Sunday 3 July our staff and many local community members braved the cold weather for a couple of hours to engage in some coastal foreshore planting opposite Calhoun Rd. The planting of this section of coast is the finishing touch of the coastal trail realignment at Portarlington and provides connectivity along the coastal trail with past plantings. We'd like to thank all our volunteers who showed up on the day and appreciate your efforts in planting a few thousand plants on the day.

Our next planting day will be at the Indented Head saltmarsh on Sunday 31 July between 10am and 12 noon with a BBQ provided afterwards. We look forward to seeing many of you there again.

Meet Our Staff - Igor Jabloncik
Coastal Horticulturalist
Igor helping Port PS kids with some beach monitoringIgor is our Coastal Horticulturist caring for approximately 17km of coastal open space and seasonal parks. His role with Bellarine Bayside includes regular turf and garden maintenance, planting, mulching, herbicide application and coastal trail maintenance on a daily basis. He also helps out with other coastal activities including our schools education days, shoreline monitoring and community planting days. Prior to working at Bellarine Bayside Igor was employed as Head Curator for the privately-owned Campbell Point House on the edge of Lake Connewarre in Leopold. The gardens here were designed in a formal French style to replicate European chateaux gardens. Igor thinks the best thing about working at Bellarine Bayside is the location and our beautiful coastal environment. If you're up early enough you might catch him riding his bike along our magnificent coastal trail.

Green Army Helps Preserve Coastal Habitat

Bellarine Bayside, together with Barwon Coast, Bellarine Landcare, Bellarine Catchment Network, and Parks Victoria, are currently hosting a Green Army team with support from Conservation Volunteers Australia. The Green Army is a federally-funded, hands-on, practical environmental action programme that supports local environment and heritage conservation projects across Australia. The Bellarine team is working on the project 'Bellarine Peninsula threatened species and ecological community conservation'. A large portion of this work is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of critical coastal habitats such as the Indented Head saltmarsh. Habitats such as this require active management to re-establish them within the coastal ecosystem.

Our Coast Open House
On June 24 Minister for Water and Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville launched the Our Coast program at the Geelong Library. Our Coast uses the latest data on projected sea level rises and storm surges to help coastal communities and government agencies plan and respond to the impact of climate change.

As part of the community consultation for the Our Coast project a series of open house events will take place during July and August. Community members will have the opportunity to speak to the consultants responsible for mapping the report, ask questions, provide comment and find out more about how the mapping was achieved and the implications of the findings. The Northern Bellarine open house will be held at The Indented Head Community Hall on Wednesday 10 August from 2 to 8pm. For further information please visit the Our Coast website at http://www.ourcoast.org.au.
