Co-Design and Urban Informality - Concepts and Techniques for Dignified Habitability: WORKSHOP.

You are invited to participate in a workshop by Dr Isis Nunez Ferera, titled Co-Design and Urban Informality - Concepts and Techniques for Dignified Habitability. The workshop will take place at the Department of Architecture and Spatial Planning Building at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) on Thursday 23 June from 09:00-13:00.

About the workshop.

This workshop will focus on action-research and co-design tools to explore issues of habitability in the context of informal settlements and contested urban areas. Building on findings from projects in the Global South, the workshop will explore the role of design-thinking in understanding micro complexities within urban informality and how this knowledge can be used to informal a critical and transformative design practice that is creative in the way it frames questions, uses resources and bridges local with scientific knowledge.

Isis Nunez Ferrera is an architect and researcher specialising in urban planning, participatory design and international development.  Her experience includes over nine years of research and practice on sustainable urban development in Brazil, India, Turkey, Kenya, Ecuador, Colombia, Honduras, Nepal, South Africa and the UK. She holds an MSc in Urban Design for Development from The Bartlett | Development Planning Unit at University College London and a PhD from the Faculty of Architecture at University of Westminster.

Her current work focuses on participatory design and visual anthropology to understand issues of urban sustainability, complexity and climate change. Current research include an ESRC-funded research project on urban transformations in South Africa (2016-2019) and a Cities Alliance research on urban informality and city growth in Ugandan cities (2016). In 2014 she was selected as one of 50 UNESCO youth leaders on Education for Sustainable Development and is a member of the Global Expert Group for the UN-Habitat initiative on Urban Planning and Design LABs.
