 President’s Message

As I start my term of office in July, I would like to thank the congregation for entrusting me with this responsibility. While serving as Audrey’s understudy for the past two years, I have seen her set an example of selfless service and joyful, gentle leadership. When there was no one to perform a task, she did it herself, without complaint. Her example has been a challenge to many of us, including myself, who tend to dwell on our individual limitations, whether of skill, personality, time or age.

Obviously, many of us have courageously tested our limits or the chalice would not still be burning every Sunday morning. The ratio of active volunteers to the number of members in our fellowship is higher than in any congregation I am aware of. Of this we can be proud. Almost everyone does something essential.  But some have begun to feel “burned out” from performing the same task on a weekly basis for years on end. Perhaps the answer may lie in taking another look at our self-perceived limitations. We are not bees in a hive, with pre-set tasks that cannot be changed. Sometimes being a specialist or expert can itself be a limitation.
I like to think that we are more like stem cells in a living organism, always capable of generating new organs, new tissues, new fuctions as needed.

In the larger society, the UU openness to new ideas and the ability to adapt to changing societal needs, helps us generate new modes of dealing with social problems, even new institutions. In our own CUUC, acting as “stem cells”, we may inject life and direction into the fellowship simply by finding new opportunities for service, perhaps volunteering to serve on a committee we have never been on before. Drop in on a meeting of the Worship Committee, the Long Range Planning Committee, the Social Justice Committee. You may find, in so doing, that new avenues for self-expression call forth new reserves of energy.  And you will certainly find that you are in a loving community in which you can test your ideas and your limitations without fear of failure.

Have a wonderful summer, and don’t forget to bring back some water from your travels for the Water Ceremony in September.

David Herr

Caring and Sharing

Greetings, Friends.

As the world makes a new commitment to respect and cherish our GLBTQ citizens in the wake of the tragic events in Orlando on June 12th, friends remind us that every tragedy has a silver lining. Connie Baker pointed out that (like me!) she had come to regard the greater Orlando area as essentially a patchwork quilt of bedroom communities - now we see a city whose residents have made real efforts to connect, to support and to treat each other with the love and care that UUs dream of when we envision the future.

The joys of this world continue to find us in spite of the sorrow.

I have reason to celebrate myself as my friend Shana at work happily delivered twin babies - Ella Jean and Elliot James - gorgeous cherubs with a lifetime of love and joy to look forward to... Also my nephew on Florida's west coast recently became a father of two with the birth of his infant son Cason in the spring, and he looks forward to being an uncle himself quite soon when his sister the ophthalmologist gives birth this summer to that sweet baby girl she has been carrying in her womb... My sister said, "They haven't chosen a name yet... so I suggested Iris (because Amy is an eye doctor)..." Naturally, I love that! I will say that the pictures she has shown me of her daughter reveal that my dear niece is without a doubt one of the loveliest pregnant women I have ever seen! She makes it look like carrying a baby to term would be Fun!

I celebrate my friend Hope and her lovely dog, Chet, finding a new home in Winter Park, Florida after many months of uncertainty and searching.

We celebrate Karine, too, finding an apartment of her own! Go Karine!

We celebrate the amazing turnout at CUUC Mistletoe Drum Circles on the 4th Saturday of the month... May and June saw the Drum Circles relocate from the sands of New Smyrna Beach to Buena Vista Park - directly on the Indian River near the Southwest footings of the North Causeway drawbridge... turtle season meant that we couldn't have a bonfire at the beach during the summertime - yet the lovely riverfront views and amenities of the park (such as a children's play area) have drawn new faces to our drum circles... in June Sharon led a workshop: "Make Your Own Anklet" prior to the drumming. Great fun was had by all participants!

Former CUUC member Joan Estrada is in rehab, recuperating from a broken hip and would love cards only, at this point. No visits or phone calls yet!  She's at Florida Hospital Oceanside, Rm. 232, 264 So. Atlantic Ave., O.B. 32173.

Connie Baker spoke during Joys and Concerns a while back about Joan's granddaughter, Whitnee, who needs a kidney transplant.  She's only 26 years old and has a rare genetic condition.  The family is trying to raise money to go toward donor testing which is not  covered by insurance. Unfortunately the testing is extensive.  They are raising money to help with this testing, so that potential donors will not have too much hardship just to be tested.  Money raised will go directly to the potential donors and testing facilities, to cover costs of testing, time off from work for donors, and any hospitalization and medication needed that is not covered by insurance. If you'd like to help, they have a gofundme page:

Laura sends her love from New England, where she has been reconnecting with her uncle and cousin (and her home state!) this summer...

It's Summer in Florida: Enjoy whatever Cools you Best!

Namaste
