Let's Celebrate the Bicycle at Pedalfest, July 23rd!

WOBO and The Original Scraper Bike Team host a mega Bike Decoration Station this year!

Walk Oakland Bike Oakland is teaming up with our favorite bike decoration professionals, The Original Scraper Bike Team to host a mega Bike Decoration Station at this year's Pedalfest.

Pedalfest is a free celebration of bikes, cycling, food, family and fun! Saturday, July 23, 2016 11am – 6pm Jack London Square.

Enjoy pedal-powered food, a pedal powered sound stage featuring live music, dare devil stunts, a kid’s bike rodeo, safety training, and the most amazing collection of bicycles to be seen from vintage and hand built bikes to high-end customs, sturdy commuters and creative art bikes.

You're sure to be inspired to add some flair or bling to your own bike as soon as you arrive.  We thought so. Stop by the WOBO Booth and Bike Decoration Station to say Hi and spruce up the old road steed!

Over 120 volunteers are needed to help make Pedalfest a splendid day of biking fun!  Sign up to help out!

Every 2nd Saturday & the following Sunday of the month!

SATURDAY! July 9th, OUP Walk: Montclair and the Sacramento Northern

Join Oakland Urban Paths for a walk exploring Montclair and the history of the Sacramento Northern Railway.

This is a hilly walk of about 3.8 miles, with a couple of sets of stairs. Sidewalks around Montclair can be narrow or non-existent, so dogs are not recommended, but leash ’em if you bring ’em.

We’ll begin the walk near the duck pond in Montclair Park. Some street parking is available on Moraga Avenue, and there is a pay parking garage at the top of La Salle Avenue.

Meet up: Montclair Park - 6300 Moraga Ave. at 10 am.  As always, wear good walking shoes, bring a hat and sunscreen as needed, and bring drinking water.

Map of the route! Check the OUP website for updates on the August walk.

SUNDAY! JULY 10th, VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION RIDE + BBQ

That's right folks!  We are throwing a party for our super awesome volunteers because they deserve to be appreciated!  (Read all about Volunteer Month just one story below.)

Meet us at Lake Merritt BART around 12:30 for the group ride or head straight to Dimond Park,  the BBQ begins around 1pm.  Details of the BBQ can be found here on Facebook!  A quick RSVP on the facebook event or by email would be terrific.

Happy Volunteer Month!!!

WOBO runs on volunteer power and we want everyone to know it!

Because of our amazing volunteers, we've seen incredible results just in the first six months of the year. So Walk Oakland Bike Oakland is gearing up to celebrate and appreciate our volunteers for the whole month!  Happy Volunteer Month!

We'll be highlighting some of our all-star volunteers on Instagram and Facebook and Twitter.  Follow any of our social media sites to learn about the folks who keep our wheels in motion; you might even see yourself!

Hey Volunteers!  We're throwing you a party!

Please join us for a BBQ powered by (in)famous WOBO Board member and charcoal hucker, Dave Campbell; we'll also have vegetable-oriented grillables and side dishes and beverages.  It's a BYOU (eating utensils, that is) and drink container kind of event to help reduce the amount of waste generated.

Meet us at Lake Merritt BART around 12:30 for the group ride or head straight to Dimond Park (3860 Hanly Rd, Oakland, CA 94602).  The BBQ begins around 1pm.  Details of the BBQ can be found here on Facebook!  A quick RSVP on the facebook event or by email would be terrific.

Women Bike Happy Hour. Next up: Thursday July 28th @ The Half Orange

We set out to have a fun happy hour for ladies who bike, but we've started a thing.

"See you next month," Ms. Jared Greer called out as she left Woods Bar & Brewery to unlock her bike and ride safely home in those fancy new protected bike lanes on Telegraph Ave.

In cahoots with Bike East Bay to support their awesome Women Bike Program we invented Women Bike Happy Hour way back in March and word is spreading around town.  I mean, it's a thing now.

Pencil us in, usually the 4th Thursday of the month. We change up the location each month so folks can visit new neighborhoods and try out new routes home, etc.  Women Bike Happy Hour is for every level of rider, women who ride bikes, women who like bikes, women who might one day want to own a bike.  All women, all riders are warmly welcome!

On July 28th we will host our very fifth Women Bike Happy Hour at The Half Orange (steps from Fruitvale BART), from 5:30 to 7:30.

Join us this month and bring your friends!
RSVP on Facebook!

Love Our Neighborhood Day Was Totally Rockin, You Guys!

The 3rd Annual Love Our Neighborhood Day car-free event on San Pablo Avenue was our most successful yet! Beautiful things happen when a state route becomes a people park. Thanks to the 65 volunteers who showed the neighborhood lots of love, plus the 100+ performers and activities hosts that got the roads buzzing with activity (not cars).

Here's a quick video of the scene Love Our Neighborhood Day Oakland from DGindi Streeter on Vimeo.

Don't forget, these events are made possible by generous sponsors and volunteers. Help keep the ju-ju flowing and donate to the cause: oaklavia.org/love-our-neighborhood-day-2016

Meet the New Folks!

We scored a couple a great new board members and you've just got to meet them!

Meet Liza Baskir: Hi, I'm Liza. I  serve as the project manager for SPUR in Oakland.  I am also a New Sector AmerciCorps RISE fellow. My main responsibilities include outreach, programming, and managing various Oakland based research projects for SPUR.

I believe in WOBO because we work to make neighborhoods safer by promoting biking and walking.  Moreover, we advocate at the neighborhood scale and empower everyone to make positive change.  Our work is community oriented by nature.

WOBO gives me hope that I will be able to achieve my dream of never owning my own car.

Meet Meryl Kline: Hi, I'm Meryl! I currently work with at the SFMTA with past positions in both the public and nonprofit sectors. One of my earliest college jobs was with Local Motion in Burlington, VT. There I got involved in the a local rail to trail project and the bike recycle program.  I began biking as my main form of transportation (when weather permitted) and it made a huge change to my life.

As someone who walks, bikes and drives, I see the value of creating more community spaces and seeing the impact on the residents. I look forward to seeing others discover the joys of bicycling and walking in Oakland and exploring the different neighborhoods.

WOBO Wants You!

Quote Of The Month:

“A better Oakland starts with better streets today, in every part of our city. We need a world-class transportation department to take a fresh look at our streets, and provide Oakland residents with safer, healthier and more accessible ways to get around, to and from work and school. Equitably enhancing our streets and adding to the array of viable transportation options in Oakland increases the vibrancy of our urban community."
