The Asheville Kiwanis Club meets for lunch, a business meeting and a guest speaker from 12-1:30pm each Tuesday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, off Merrimon Ave near downtown.

Kenneth Allen died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 21st. Kenneth became a good friend to all of his fellow Kiwanians, and he will be missed by all who knew him.

 

  • Dr. Matt Massey and Mary Overton with Carolina Hand and Sports Medicine 
Congratulations to the Enka Key Club scholarship winners!  Lucus will attend UNC Charlotte and Veronica will attend Mars Hill.  Thanks to "grandmother" Peggy for her work with the club.
  • Board meeting next week, June 28, after the meeting.
  • Jensen will be attending the International Kiwanis Convention in Toronto June 22-28.  
  • The North Buncombe Club needs volunteers to help with their July 4th race from 8am-12.  There will be a sign up sheet next week.
District Food Drive
The District Food Drive is April 1 - August 19.  Bring your non perishable items to the meeting each week.  We will give the food we collect to Steadfast House.  Some things they can use are staples such as  flour, sugar, canned meats, cooking oil,etc.  If you have extra  fresh garden items you would like to donate, someone will drop them off for you after the meeting.

Speaker Spotlight
 
Our speaker was Bill Murdock with Eblen Charities.  Eblen was founded in 1991 by Joe Eblen.  It has grown from assisting 300 families with one program during its first year to currently assisting tens of thousands of families with more than 70 programs.
Some of the current projects Eblen is doing include:  
  • The graduation initiative – dropped dropout rate 57% in 7 years
  • Headlock on Hunger – all food collected goes back to the schools
  • They have given 40,000 meals to kids this summer so far
  • Giving fans to those who need them.  Gave out 150 fans in 4 days
  • Tools for schools- Filled up a 48 ft. tractor trailer with school supplies last year  and helped about 5500 kids before school started.  Continue giving out school supplies all year.
  • They gave out 13,000 meals the day before Thanksgiving
  • The St. Nicolas Project helped 4500 children last year.  Adults get to shop for children in the "store"
  • Dental Sealant program at AB tech gives sealants to all 2nd graders in the city and county.  Last year they helped 800 children.

  • July 5-Mr. Drake Fowler, Chief Operations Officer of the NC Arboretum discussing programs and new attractions at the NC Arboretum.
  • July 12-Mr. Ray Rapp, retired State Representative, with a presentation on the history of the Railroad in Western North Carolina.
  • July 19-Mr. Tracey Elliott, Executive Director of the Asheville Humane Society
  • July 26-Ms. Shelly Schenker, President of the Asheville River Arts District, will share a program on the development of the River Arts District, its attractions and opportunities for future growth
