Huawei Enters the Patent Wars
Everyone in the patent world knows of the legendary smartphone patents battles between Apple and Samsung. Now it seems an new player is entering the arena.
Huawai, the China telecom electronics giant, and the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer, has filed patent infringement lawsuits against Samsung in China and in the United States. This is the first time a Chinese company has sued Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer for patent infringement.
The lawsuits are in connection with 4G wireless standards as well as other smartphone features and reportedly involve at least 11 separate patents. Damages sought are unknown. Huawei maintains it is open to negotiations for “reasonable compensation.”
It seems Samsung has no intention of backing down, and of course it is no stranger to such litigation.
Huawei is reported to have 50,377 registered with over 80,000 pending within China and around the world. The company spent 59.6 billion RMB ($9.08 billion), or 15.1 percent of its revenue, on research and development last year.
