Our thanks to Wellington Branch who pulled it all together and to the members who came to the meeting - happy to report we had numbers well past the required quorum! NZSA welcomes Joan Rosier-Jones as President of Honour
The New Zealand Society of Authors (PEN NZ Inc) held their AGM Saturday 11 June and Joan Rosier-Jones was appointed President of Honour 2016 – 2017.
This position is awarded to a writer in recognition of their services to the Society and to the literary community.
Joan has a rich history with the New Zealand Society of Authors, engaging both at the National level and Branch level. She was Chair of the Auckland Branch from 1993-1995, President of the Society 1999-2001 and the NZSA representative on the Copyright Council (now WeCreate) 1998-2000. Joan was a member of the National Council as delegate for Central Districts from 2003 to 2011.
When authors became shareholders of Copyright Licensing, Joan was one of the first writer directors (with Gordon McLauchlan) on the board 1996-2004. She continues to share her wisdom on the NZSA Membership Advisory Committee, and is a mentor and assessor in our professional development programme funded by Creative New Zealand. Joan lives in Wanganui and tutors in writing.

CLNZ / NZSA Research Grants 2016
Open for applications today!
Assisting Writers’ Research Efforts with four grants of $5,000. Three of the grants are Open Research Grants and the fourth, the Stout Research Centre Grant, includes the $5,000 plus a valuable six-week residential fellowship at the Stout Research Centre (SRC) at Victoria University of Wellington. NZSA adds five writers to the Honours List
Congratulations to Anne Holden, Witi Ihimaera, Paul Maunder, Fiona Kidman and Bernard Brown who were all honoured at the 2016 AGM dinner held in Wellington on Saturday. Each of these members joined in 1971, except for Anne who became a member in 1970.
Last year for the first time we honoured the loyal longstanding members who have been with the Society for 45 years or more. We will continue giving out this honour each year as it is so important their contribution is recognised and applauded. With the the ongoing support of our members we are empowered to fight for the rights of all writers.
Here's the honours list from last year: Marilyn Duckworth (joined 1959), Ian Cross LM (1959) , Maurice Gee (1964), Joy Cowley (1966), John Dunmore (1970), Alan Roddick (1970), Philip Temple (1970), Beverley Price aka Beverley Randell (1970), and James McNeish (1970).

Residency Applications For New Zealand Pacific Studio - celebrating its 15th birthday this year.

New Zealand Pacific Studio, a residency centre in an historic 1911 home in rural Wairarapa, offers writers and artists that space and time.
One of the few year-round residencies in the country to accept both NZ and overseas writers and artists, NZPS is located minutes from Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre ( complimentary entry for residents) and about 15 minutes from Masterton ( a complimentary pick-up/drop-off point.) NZPS has 6 unique workplaces - a clock-maker’s loft, visual art and writing studios, Scandinavian-style cottage complete with sauna - and a library of about 2,000 books.
- Candidates are asked to provide a brief statement of their residency project and sample of their writing. 7 funded fellowships a year are offered throughout the year.

Radio New Zealand Drama department
In February we wrote a letter to the Chief Executive of Radio New Zealand expressing our concern about reduced funding to the drama department and the consequent loss of staff. We did not get a response so followed up with a second letter in May.
The purpose of the letters was to ensure our national broadcasting service continues to offer quality radio drama from books and plays written by New Zealanders and that the creators are paid fairly for the use of the original and adapted works. We also wanted to discover if the cuts to the drama department are solely the result of the ‘fund freeze’ or if it is the direction RNZ would be taking regardless of available funds.
We have not had a written response yet but Kyle Mewburn, President of NZSA, received a call from RNZ to let us know that RNZ is taking a new approach to radio drama and changes will soon be announced. We look forward to the announcement.

Advanced Fiction Course – Journey to Publication
This is a new one-off course offered at the Creative Hub to those with a Masters of Creative Writing, those who have published a book of fiction, and graduates of a Creative Hub Thirty Week Fiction/Memoir course.
This course features:
- Manuscript development by NZ’s leading fiction editors
- Sessions by successful published writers
- Student work will be discussed on a weekly rotational basis using group session feedback chaired by Creative Hub director John Cranna
- Coverage of available scholarships, mentoring and bursaries
In the last three years, 20 Creative Hub graduates have published books, or won prizes in national or international writing awards.
Dates: August 2nd - 26th October 2016
Course Length: 12 weeks, weekly on Tuesdays 6-9pm
Location: The Creative Hub, Auckland waterfront

CLNZ $25,000 WRITERS’ AWARD
CLNZ have launched a new $25,000 award for non-fiction writers, as part of their revised Cultural Fund investment plan. The Award enables the successful applicant to devote time to a specific writing project.
The new $25,000 CLNZ Writers’ Award will be made available to one writer each year for the next three years and features broad and inclusive criteria to allow writers across the full range of non-fiction genres, including those with an educational focus, to apply.
We encourage non-fiction writers across all genres to consider applying for this award.
Applicants must submit details of a planned project to a selection panel and applications must be received by 4.00pm on Thursday 23 June 2016.
The winner of this year’s award will be announced at the New Zealand Society of Author’s National Writers Forum to be held in Auckland on 17th and 18th September 2016.

PEN NZ media release 13 June:
PEN NZ condemns the continuing ban by the Fijian government of Television New Zealand Pacific Affairs correspondent Barbara Dreaver. PEN views the continuation of this ban as an indication of the ongoing erosion of freedom of expression in the Pacific. New Zealand currently ranks 5th in the world in the latest World Press Freedom Index. This is well ahead of Australia, which ranks 25th out of 180 countries. New Zealand should take its place as leader in the Pacific on the World Press Freedom Index, to make a clear stance in favour of Barbara Dreaver and the other journalists currently banned from Fiji. In the last year there has been a marked erosion worldwide in freedom of expression. More
‘Top Writers’ Radio Show
‘Top Writers’, a show which interviews authors from the Top of the South Branch of the New Zealand Society of Authors, features a PEN section hosted by Dana Wensley. The show begins with freedom of speech issues, focusing the lens on one author each session. This Saturday, the show discusses Behrouz BOOCHANI, who has been incarcerated on Manus Island, Papua New Guinea for almost 3 years. Boochani is one writer out of the 1054 writers currently on PEN’s Case List. An Iranian national, in his native Iran, Boochani worked as a journalist for several newspapers. Since his detention on Manus Island Boochani has been documenting human rights violations, which he passes on to the Humanitarian Research Partners (HRP), who in turn pass the information on to the United Nations and its relevant agencies.
With the demise in freedom of speech in the Pacific voices like Boochani, are a valuable link to what is going on in the region. The show airs on Fresh FM. More
