2015-2016 theme verse:

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.  -  Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)
There has been a lot of dirt moving and tree cutting over the past two weeks and we would like to update you on several of these projects.

Welcome Center
We recently removed a number of trees near the Welcome Center and their removal has allowed us to double the parking spaces in that particular lot (above left). This additional parking will benefit both Admissions and attendees to tennis matches. There are some additional trees near the Welcome Center that are dying or leaning toward the building and these will be taken down over the next several months. Our Grounds team is also in the process of bringing an irrigation line from behind the Welcome Center to the front of the building and out to the boulevard.  This will allow for consistent watering of that entire area in an effort to improve the look of that entrance to our campus.

Lot across from Newby
Our goal is to create more of a park-like setting with this lot as well as construct a walking and golf cart path through there from behind the Admissions building that will connect to the sidewalk in front of Newton Hobson.  A number of fallen and dead trees were removed from this lot along with a decaying garage.  We will be working on this lot over the next months and look forward to the possibilities for this area.

The lots across from the Soccer field
Due to the planned construction of the new residence hall, we will be losing the gravel lot across from Nicholson-Mitchell. Our plan is to add a parking lot across from the soccer field to make up for this loss. To enable us to have available parking during construction, the house across from the soccer field has been removed, along with several very large trees.  This area will be graded and leveled and then gravel will be spread to provide for close to 200 parking spaces.

The new residence hall
The new residence hall will be constructed where the current gravel lot resides with parking extending back to College Street. To make room for this large construction project and the new parking lot, the Alumni house and Dr. PB Wood’s office needed to be removed.  A number of trees will also need to be removed in this area over the next couple months.   We plan to connect the new residence hall parking lot with the lot behind Newby.

Hillside above the baseball field
Several large trees and a lot of brush has been removed from the hillside overlooking right field. The plan is to seed this area to provide for a nice viewing area for baseball games. Our contractor was also able to remove the large pile of dead material that had been piled up near the Criminal Justice house property. We elected to have him haul it away instead of burning it.

Amphitheater
We will be installing the irrigation and the steps starting June 20 and plan to lay the sod starting on June 28.   The stage and band shell will be finished at a later date. Above right is a photo of the progress made up to this past week.

Other
Starting July 5th we will be aerating and top dressing the athletic fields and July 11-22 we will be installing the irrigation at the baseball field. The irrigation for the softball field will follow in August.

Housing needed

Garrett Bireline is SWU’s new men’s soccer coach. He has moved to Central to start preparing for the upcoming season and is in need of housing in July as he and his wife look for a home to purchase. His wife will be coming in August. He doesn’t want to sign a short-term lease so he’s looking for a place to stay until he can get into a house. Does anyone need a housesitter for July? Does anyone have a spare room he could use or rent?  If you can help Garrett out, please contact Joe Brockinton at jbrockinton@swu.edu or at 864-644-5142.  Thank you.
