Welcome to the SpringE

From the Headmistress

Dear Parents

It has certainly been a week of mixed weather,  with an impact on matches and photographs. We are certainly hoping that all the rain has fallen that possibly can, leaving us a dry week for Sports’ Day preparation next week. As a small child asked me today  'Have the clouds run out yet?'

After SpringE was published last week we were delighted to receive a card on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth to thank us for her birthday card, arriving as it did on our Red, White and Blue Day to commemorate The Queen’s official birthday; it was a lovely surprise.

It was a treat to see so many Dads for their Father’s Day tea run by the Brownies yesterday, a particular thank you to those who came despite the timings clashing with  England v Wales match.

As I write this morning we are preparing for our annual charity fun run, organised by the School Council. The children looked amazing with their very bright clothes and 'crazy' hair and are looking forward to their picnic lunch after their exertions for our worthy causes. Thank you to all the children for your efforts with charity fundraising this year.

Have a super weekend.

Laura Brown

Olympic Celebrations
The Dragonflies have been enjoying learning about the Olympics this term. This week we had so much fun making edible Olympic Torches. We mixed delicious popcorn with marshmallows and some icing, which we coloured with orange food pigment. We then piled the gooey mixture into an ice cream cone to create the flame effect. This made the perfect treat for snack time, which was relished by all. The children then really enjoyed independently writing about making their torches and they drew some lovely pictures too.

Bright and Beautiful
Springfield was awash with colour and crazy hair this morning with everyone ready for the fun run in aid of our school charities -Clic Sargeant, Acorns Hospice and the RSPCA. The run was followed by a picnic lunch.

Magic Measurements
In Year One this week, we have been exploring weight and capacity. We used special wizard cups to measure the capacity of different potion bottles. It was very fun and messy but we learned lots about the capacity of lots of different bottles. We even estimated how many cups would fill the bottles and some of our estimates were very different to the actual measurements.

Up Up and Away
Year Two visited an aeroplane in the basement of the Heart of Worcester College to see what it was like to go on a flight.  The children were given boarding passes and then shown to their seats. Before the plane took off the safety demonstration took place and once the crew had checked that we were all safely strapped in the plane took off for our flight to Las Vegas.  The children all had the opportunity to try on the life jackets and use the oxygen masks before refreshments were brought round.

Then the children marked on a world map the countries they had visited.  These ranged from Scotland to Spain and Spain to the Ukraine.

At the end, there was time for a snack by the river before the heavens opened.  Everyone dashed under the trees and waited for Mrs Brown to rescue us in the School minibus.

Woodwind Harmony
This Half Term, a new musical club has begun. Mrs McNally, one of our woodwind tutors is leading a Recorder Club for children. With 14 children already attending on a Wednesday morning, there is plenty of noise and enthusiasm emerging from the Music Department.

Maths Challenge
Year Two spent the morning at RGS The Grange enjoying a Maths Challenge with the children from RGS The Grange Year Two.  Sixth Form students from the Senior School came to help.  The challenges included remaking shapes on Geo boards, number games, money challenges and problem solving. Everyone had a great time and made new friends.

Talent Galore
Last week, Springfield held it's annual Inter House Performing Arts Competition 'Springfield's Got Talent'.

Each house prepared a solo or group vocal, drama and dance item as well as a Wild Card and House Song. This year the theme was 'Oliver' the Musical and there were renditions of 'Pick a Pocket', 'Consider Yourself' and 'Food Glorious Food'. Ellie Williams performed with the Lions House in their rendition of 'I just can't wait to be King!'.

The winning house this year was Tigers. Well done to everyone who worked so hard to prepare and especially our wonderful House Captains for their organisation.

Time for Tea
At Brownies, we held a pre Father's Day afternoon tea, with cakes made by the Brownies. Everyone who came had a great time and certainly enjoyed the delicious cakes and refreshing tea. Thank you to all the Brownies for their hard work and to everyone who came along. It was lovely to see so many Dads especially as the football was on (at least England did us proud and won 2-1). We were also raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and so far have raised £154.29.

A Royal Debate
On Monday, Year Six joined the pupils from Year Six at The Grange to participate in an afternoon of debating.

The motion was 'This House would abolish the Monarchy’. First of all, we heard from the ‘proposition’ who gave some  reasons why Britain might be better without a Monarchy and suggested we have a President instead. Then we heard from the ‘opposition’ who gave reasons why it would be better to keep it. It was lovely to see Katy Marsh and Elizabeth McCabe from last year’s Year Six taking part. The ‘floor’ (us) were allowed to ask some questions and then we had to vote. The motion was just carried in favour of abolishing the monarchy.

Pupils from Year Six thought this club looked really interesting so we look forward to seeing some of them next year.

Knapp and Paper Mill
This week, Year Six travelled to Leigh Brook for some fieldwork related to their topic on Waterworlds.

They found out about the stream profile by measuring the width and different depths of the stream. Then, they used a hydroprop to measure the speed of the stream at one metre intervals. They discovered that the deeper the water the faster the flow. They looked at features of the stream and how erosion and deposition were creating meanders and the fact that the brook had moved several metres over time.

In the afternoon, they had an opportunity to see what was living in the stream by using a method called kick sampling. Certain creatures only live in clean water and it was good to see that Leigh Brook is unpolluted.

This was a great opportunity to do some interesting experiments and even though it was quite damp at times it was a very enjoyable day.

Musical Melodies
This Term the 'Trinity Rush Hour Concert' took place at Springfield. There were many delightful performances including some premieres from some of our younger children who have just begun their musical journeys.

There were performances on a range of instruments including violin, piano, voice, trumpet, cello guitar and from the Hand Chimes Club.
