What is an 'open streets' event?

Open streets initiatives temporarily close streets to automobile traffic, so that people may use them for walking, bicycling, dancing, playing, and socializing. Open Streets events encourage active transportation, neighborhood connections, and celebrations of public space and health. There are more than 100 documented 'open streets' events in North America, with many others taking place across the globe.

Celebrate summer...

with a bike ride! The sun on your face, a leisurely pace, and good spirited companions await you next Sunday on this SBBA Field Trip:

Neighborhood Tour
Meet at the corner of
Rosa Parks & Concord on Sunday, June 26th at 10 am.
We'll ride people friendly streets in North Portland  with a Traffic Safety Specialist and see the design elements embraced by neighborhoods to create walk and bike friendly spaces!

The tour will conclude along the Portland Sunday Parkways route and allow you to independently explore the open streets event at your own pace. Check out the music at Arbor Lodge Park, the free kids activities along the route, and the wide variety of delicious food served up by participating food carts!

The event is free and fun for all ages and ability levels!
* While the Parkway Event is usually rain or shine, SBBA will post a confirmation/cancellation notice of the morning tour on our Facebook page on the morning of the 26th by 7am if the weather turns wet.
Update
on the Salem Greenway event previously scheduled for July 30, 2016:
After careful consideration, this 2016 event has been postponed to allow more time for planning and development. An opportunity to network and learn from other open street planners has become available and Salem leaders want to take advantage of the unique opportunity. The City of Salem, in collaboration with local active transportation enthusiasts, will be coordinating efforts to launch an informed and sustainable open streets program here in Salem in 2017. We’ll share more news when it becomes available. Until then… those wanting to be active on the July 30th date are invited to participate in these other (same day) events:
* Salem Bicycle Club has two Group Rides scheduled. See their website for full details.
* Just Walk Salem has two volunteer-led walks scheduled. See their website for full details.
