2016 TD Markham Jazz Festival announces award-winning headliner for Saturday night, August 20!

Summer is arriving and with it a whole season of hot, tasty jazz! Mark your calendars now for the 19th annual TD Markham Jazz Festival. The action unfolds all along Main Street Unionville from Thursday, August 18 to Sunday, August 21, as well as at numerous “Hot Spot” venues around Markham in the week leading up to the Festival.

Among more than 30 free concerts on three stages and along Main Street, here’s one to circle in RED!

• Stay tuned for news about other featured performers as they are confirmed.

Our Saturday night headliner (August 20, 9:00 – 10:30 p.m.) is New York’s incredible, amazing Dr. Lonnie Smith.

Hailed as a “guru of the Hammond B-3 organ,” a “living musical icon” and the most creative jazz organist by a slew of publications, Dr. Lonnie Smith is an unparalleled musician, composer, performer and recording artist. He has been featured on more than 70 albums and performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of the greatest jazz, blues and R&B giants in the industry.

Adding to his accolades is the announcement last week that Dr. Lonnie has just been named one of five 2017 NEA Jazz Masters Fellows by the National Endowment for the Arts – one of America’s highest honors in jazz. The artists will be celebrated at a tribute concert on April 3, 2017, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Just one more sign that the TD Markham Jazz Festival leads the way in sharing the jazz community’s hottest performers with a loyal and committed audience. See you at the Millennium Bandstand!

The TD Markham Jazz Festival is a not-for-profit organization with a mandate to enrich cultural life in the region by bringing emerging and established jazz artists to Markham for all to enjoy. Established in 1998, the festival draws more than 25,000 residents and visitors to the streets of Unionville during the third weekend in August. Local and international artists deliver over 30 open-air performances during the weekend as well as in selected “hot spots” and at a ticketed opening-night concert. During the year, the festival hosts “Hot Spot Concerts” at selected venues throughout Markham. TD Canada Trust became its title sponsor in 2014.
